THE MOBNIRG ORBGOKTAN, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14, 1002. 15 HOP MARKET WEAK Decline in -Germany. Affects . This Coast. . PRICES HERE NO LOWER YET Sitcctlon in ' London. Is in Buyers Favor Another Estimate of the World's Hop Crop. TTfle hop market has" taken a turn for the worse. The tone is decidedly -weaker, and dealers, look for a decline. The occasion for the change Is the drop abroad. Private ad vices reported German- markets lower and the London market in buyers' favor. New York was quiet, except for choice New York States. In the Portland market no change was made In quotations, in spite of the weakness, as a number of orders are still on hand at the old prices. The latest Jour nal of Commerce, dated the 8th, said: It "was 6tated that English heroes have been soliciting consignments of Oregon hops to tho Lfndon market, and were guaranteeing a price of 20c f. o. b. coast. Tho same paper said: Locally business continued to hang Are. Brewers were slow to make purchases with prices on their present basis, and there was practically no trading between dealers. The majority of tho trade, however, expressed confidence in the altuatlon, and' in the ab sence of any pressure to sell, prices were firmly maintained, with the ranges quoted. Mall advices from California said: "Sono ma will come down with about 16,000 bales, and California with 46,000 to 4.8,000 bales. All this talk about 58,000 bales for this state Is not true." United States Commercial Agent W. Heavy Selling by Large Speculative Pools Hopefal Fcelias as to Out come of Strilce Negotiations. NEW YORK. OcU 13. The violent and al most uncontested breal$ in prices of stocks this morning and a practically, complete recovery this afternoon Is the history of today's market The cldslng prices showed a sprinkling of net gains among some Of thevmost Important stocks In the list, reaching a point in Reading, and Ontario & Western. At one time before noon there were ragged declines Indicated of all the way from 1 to 12 points from Saturday's level, many of the leading speculative stocks having lost 3 to 4 points in the two hours of trading. The sentiment in the street seemed, mixed before the opening between the contending in fluences of the reports that a settlement of the coal strike had been arranged, and the admo nition contained in the Saturday bank state ment that there must be further contractions of loans placed in the stock market Tho lat ter Influence swept away all' other considers tions, and, with the exception of a momentary rally after the opening, due to the taking of bear profits by Saturday's shorts, the market pursued a steady downward course, under a continuous stream of liquidation. It was evi dent that further selling out on the part of some large speculative pools was going on, pre sumably under pressure of the demand from money-lenders for repayment of loans. Tha, Gould Southwesterns and some of the stocks in which the so-called Western contingent have operated largely were notably affected. The recent tendency of hlgh-pricd Investment stocks, which had been pushed to an extraordi nary level, to break violently on small sales, continued In evidence in tho cases of American Express, United States Express, Lackawanna, Delaware & Hudson. Great Northern preferred. General' Electric and similar stocks. When the liquidation first showed signs, of de creasing, the bears caused a sharp rally by covering of shorts, after which the market lay sluggish and neglected for an hour. The spec ulative sentiment then yjelded to the Influence of the hopeful feeling that the consultations and activities of tho financial and operating powers of the great anthracite companies would lead to substantial results In the settlement of the coal strike. Any admission of a change in the deadlock was impossible to obtain, and the unvarying assertion by tho operators dealt only with the possibility of Improving the output of tho mines under protection of the military by seceders from the strikers. But the action of the market reflected the faith that developments were forthcoming looking to a settlement Reports received over Sunday of the receipts of several parcels of gold from Europe, and of an expected arrival within two weeks at San Francisco of $1,500,000 additional Australian gold were powerless to offset the depressing in fluence of the bank statement Money went .to 18 per cent soon after the opening. Sterling exchange broke sharply, but discounts in Lon don responded with an advance. The comlns week's syndicate requirements, which foot up rome $50,000,000, were considered formidable In '.lew of the money situation. The market closed with a rally In full force and prices e the tcp level. Bonds weakened and recovered In sympathy with stocks. Total fcales, $4,645,000. United States new and old 4s declined H per cent on tho last call. Closing: Stock Quotations. NEW YORK. Oct. 13.-CIoslng prices da tho New York stock market were as follows: n So STOCKS. Wet weather and higher cables caused a strong opening in wheat today, but large receipts in the Northwest with pre dictions of better weather, caused considerable selling early by commission houses. Local sen timent, however, was bullish, and offerings were well taken. In the latter part of the day prices advanced again on a good demand, with limited offerings. Poor grading, fair cash de mand and some increase In the visible were the sustaining features. December opened c higher, at 71f37114c. but slid down to 70c early on heavy liquidation. Later, offer ings became limited, and with good buying by commission houses there was an advance to 71c. Another reaction followed, but the close was c higher, at 7071c Corn opened strong on wet weather and high er cables. The feature was the Unloading of a long line by a prominent trader. It being re ported over 1,000,000 bushels were disposed of. The "close was c,lower, at 4747c Oats were strong with corn, but on commls-eion-house selling prices tended lower. ELLENSBURG, Oct. 13. Special.) The Ellensburg levy this year Is 12 mills, as against 12 last year. The levy In the school district Is 2 mills, while it was 4 In 190L This reduction is brought about by the very general pay ment of taxes, the community being very prosperous; and there has been very little delinquency. Even at the reduced fig ure, provision Is made for the payment during the ensuing year of J23.000 In bonds of the Issue of 1S32, which cleans up that series, $53,000 having been paid .In 1901.
