THE, MOKKISG XDRXQlOAH, fATTTEDAY, BEPTEMBER 6, 1902. 15 BIG TRADE IN SIGHT Good Outlook Is Reported All Along the Line. RAILWAY EARNINGS INCREASING Farmers "Will Be Fully Compensated Xor Any Shortage In Crop by Higher Quotations Business ' Failures at Low Mark. NEW YORK, Sept. 5. R,. G. Dun 6 weekly review tomorrow will say: Steady progress Is 'reported In trade and in dustry. Distribution of merchandise Is htavy. and a. healthy tone is evident. Domestic con ditions continue much better than those exist ing abroad, and home trade reotlved more at tention for foreign commerce. Farm products have appreciated in value, owing to the less favorable weather, and .producers will be fully compensated for any decrease in quantity by the higher quotations. Earnings of railways during August were 3.6 per cent larger than a year ago, and 18.0 per cent in excess of 1000. Better deliveries of coke and liberal receipts of foreign material have lessened the pressure in the iron and stel Industry, while quotations in a few lines have weakened. Domestic demands are not decreas ing much, new business having been placed, and home consumption will continue to call for Imports on a larger scale. New plants are be ing added to the productive capacity as rap Idly ns possible in railway equipment, especially steel rails, and orders are already placed or next year. Quotations of footwear are fully maintained at the recent advance. A goodfeature Is the urgency for quick shipment, Indicating that stocks are low. Leather sells freely at recent advances in quotations, but hides appear to have risen above the views of tanners, result ing In a quiet market. , Advancing raw material aroused much anx iety among purchasers of cotton goods, and there were numerous Inquiries for forward contract, but the volume of business was not materially Increased. Agricultural conditions are satisfactory, and the official estimate as" to cotton is not exag gerated. The yield will not be large enough to sustain consumption at the present rate. "Wheat Is coming forward freely, though re ceipts do not equal the abnormally heavy movement a year ago. Corn developed strength because of fears that injury would be done by frost, and the movement is very slow com pared with last year's figures. Bank Clearing. NEW YORK, Sept. 5. All available data confirms reports of past good trade, and foreshadows good or better yet to come. It has been essentially a week of active buying in distributing trade. Reports as to Aurust trade have been almost uniformly favorable, and the records of failures show business mortality to have been confined to a low Summer minimum. Prices show persistent strength, despite the fact that agricultural products, except corn and prime cattle, tend lower. Father less disturbance is noted In labor matters. The anthracite trouble still hangs over the situation, but the volume of coal shipments Is slowly and steadily Increasing. Some wagp advances are noted In widely sep arated lines. Collections 4n the North and West are uni formly good, and fome improvement Is noted in the South. Jobbing activity is undiminished in the West, Northwest and Southwest, and Is of satisfactory volume at the West. Dry goods and shoes, millinery, drugs, .hardware, grocer ies, clothing and lumber figure actively in the demand. Leather sales are high at the West, but high trade prices discourage the move ment. The advance In cotton is stimulating the cot ton goods market. Good reorders are noted In woolen goods, but Spring goods are meeting mtfst attention The fuel shortage Is pressing on the Iron furnaces, and now the scarcity of cars and motive power Is affecting the move ment of ore from Lake ports to the Pittsburg district. New demand for pig Iron, however. Is light. Heavy imports of foreign iron and steel have cut down premiums on immediate deliv ery business. Sales of foreign-made materials are large. Copper Is slightly firmer, while tin Is lower. Wheat, including flour, exports for the week ending SepterriW 4, aggregate 6,27&290 bush els, against 5,436.630 bushels last "week.- and 4.403,864 bushels. In this week Jast.yearA .... Business failures In the United States for the week number 133. as against' 140 last week, and 1C9 In this week last year. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain. Flour, Feed, Etc. In the absence ot any pressing necessity for wheat, local exporters are n6t forcing matters by paying a premium over export values, which are In the vicinity of 6061c for Walla Walla. Farmers seem equally Independent, for they are not disposed to sell at these figures, ex cept In a small way. As most of the ships In port were chartered with lay days "beginning September 15, or later, clearances will be very light until the latter part ot the month. Some of the Valley mills are taking time by the forelock, and picking up choice, wheat whrever they can find It, at a premium over export values. This prevents any Valley wheat of consequence coming to this market, and there are no signs of a full cargo in ight yet. PAUL IS A FEATURE HEAVY" TRADIKG IS THE STOCK AT NEW YORK." Made a. Net .Gala of Almost Tkree Polats Tke Chesapeake Fool Checked. NEW YORK, Sept. 6. At the opening today the stock market reflected little of yesterday's reactionary tendency, though the undertone was somewhat heavy. In view of the unstable money market and lower prices from London. St, Paul came into early prominence, and with Missouri Pacific divided the day's honors, re newing rumors of a closer working agreement between those two lines. On transactions ex ceeding 65,000 shares, St. Paul, while closing somewhat below the best, made a net gain ot almost 3 points, while Missouri Pacific," which was much more active, gained The other Southwestern stocks, especially those tn the Gould Fystem, made some recovery on tho growing belief that the Government crop re ports would prove somewhat exaggerated. The comparative inactivity of Reading common, which was heavy throughout, resulted, It was believed, 'from the Impression that the prob able contest -for control had been settled. The Chesapeake & Ohio pool was checked by reason of the. road's poor showing .for the latter part of AugusC but closed with a fractional gain. Wabash Issues advanced on news of a favor able judicial decision, and the debenture Bs, together with St. Paul common, were among the few Issues that mado new high records. Tho early realizing also brought gains to a num ber of industrials. Manhattan was the feature of the transactions, though Its gain was only fractional. Irregularity followed another saueeze In call money, which worked nominally as high as 10 per cent, but actually not higher than 8H. and fell off as low as 3& Much afternoon's busi ness was In the Industrials, notably Colorado Fuel, Pacific Mail, People's Gas, Leader Issues and tho independent steel and iron companies. all of which closed with net gains. In the last hour there was a general recovery to abovo the previous day's final prices. J The Subtreasurys debt balance at tho clear ing-house of over $1,600,000 was chiefly due to heavy payments for the Navy, and $250,000 for account of Klondike gold, -omorrow's bank statement will. It Is believed, show a further loss of surplus reserves, but it is not expected to reflect in full the $6,000,000 lost to the Sub treasury and the Interior by, local Institutions. Railroad bonds showed a good tone through out the day, but the market was less active. Total sales, par value, $3,220,000. United States old 4s coupon advanced and the new 4s reg istered declined H. GOOD UPTURN l(J WHEAT CABLES ARE STEADY AND THE OUT- SHOE DEMAND LARGE. Sentiment Is Generally Bullish Oats Move In Sympathy and Close Strong: and Higher. CHICAGO, Sept. 5. There was a brisk de mand early In the wheat nit. lararelv from the outside. Commission-houses bought lib erally, and there was good support under De cember options. Much of the talk on the bull side was fear of frosts In the Northeast. This was supposed to be the principal cause of tho upturn, but steady cables, lighter receipts and bad grading helped materially. The sentiment generally was bullish, and there was no selling pressure present. After the early bulge, the market was Inclined to dullness and prices fluc tuated narrowly. September sold from 7272c and closed Tie higher at 7272c December closed strong, c higher, at 68Me$T6c corn had a largo trade early, and tho market advanced strongly on general demand.
