Business In the wool mar ket Is light this week, orders having dimin ished perceptibly during the last six days. Dealers have been quite busy, however, filling orders which came In during the so-called rush period last month. Thero has seldom been a Summer in whinh tho general tone has been healthlor than this. The situation In the West has been marked by a liberal movemont In the mnrirnt and wool shorn this Spring Is being rushed forward qulto generally for immediate con sumption. It looks like a good domestic wool season for some months to come. Stocks of foreign wool are lightest for years at this season and no further supplies of msmni . likely to turn up until early Winter. The general quotations are very firm and generally higher. NEW YORK. Aug. 5. There were only a few diversions In today's stock 1 market to relieve what was otherwise a dead level of dullness and monotony. Dealings, during the first hour, were somewhat more active than yesterday and the moderate upward movement became qulto general. Only a few stocks moved more than a point, and the Interest promptly died away. The execution of orders In a few high grade investment stocks, of which the small floating supply is closely held, caused soma striking advances. The rise in the Vander bllts, led by New York Central, was apparently based on an expectation that today's meeting of directors of the Manhattan Elevated Rail road would lead to some action In regard to the rumored plan to lease Manhattan. The adjournment without any announcement led to reaction In the stocks thus affected. Amer ican Express and United States Exprcsj rose cosily on the accumulation of some small, amounts of stocks. Missouri Pacific resisted some pronounced selling prssure and moved Irregular all day. The refusal of a Montana court to vacate an Injunction granted to the Amalgamated Cop per Company against tho working of a contest ed mine by a rival gave a firm tone to Amal gamated Copper, but the dealings in the stock wero small. The rumors of a combination betweeen the St. Louis & San Francisco and Central of Geor gia Railway was responsible for the advance In the former and for the buying of Income bonds of the latter. Denials of the report from well-informed quarters took the anima tion out of the movement. London sold some stocks held here today. The celling Is sup posed to represent the retransfer to New York of securities sent to London In June to be held there for American owners, who were tak ing advantago of cheaper interest rates. The market closed dull and heavy. There was a firm tone In the bond market bnt no features. Total safes, par value, $1,375,000; United States bonds were unchanged on the call.
