THE MOBNING OREGONIAN, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 1902. ii COMMERCIAL AHD Receipts of potatoes -were again light yes terday, and the price was slightly higher, some buyers quoting up to ?1 30 Tor fancy Burbanks. The last steamer sailing from. Portland took out a smaller consignment than usual, and there Is some prospect for a better market. New potatoes are coming to hand In Improved condition and larger quantities, but they are still held at fancy prices which limits the sale. Asparagus receipts are also heavier, and the price has dropped, to 8c per pound. Another car of hananas arrived yesterday, and as they reached -the market only 24 hours later than the lot arriving Monday, the market was well supplied, and the services of the hawkers -were required to clean up the riper portion of the shipment. Butter receipts were again heavy, and more of the offerings are selling at 224c than at the top figure. Unless the .outside de mand Improves, lower prices are- certain, as the local market will not absorb all of the offerings at present quotations. Veal was In big supply again jesterday, and was very weak at quotations. Eggs are going Into cold stor age at 13c, 13c and 14c, and the market Is fairly steady at this time. There are no changes in groceries. Bnnlc Clearings. . . Exchanges. Balances. i'oriiana 5400,030 Tacoma 235,085 Spokane 40.254 Seattle 617,107 ?S2.054 32,837 30.493 63.653 POItTLAXD MARKETS. Grain, Flour, Etc. One or .two lots of Walla Walla wheat were offering yesterday at 65c. with no takers, and at least one small sale was made at 04c The market, hou ever. Is dull and lifeless, with buy ers and sellers, except In rare cases, a long wajs apart. Some apprehension Is felt over the prices paid for new-crop ships. Upwards of a dozen nfw-crop fixtures have been made at rates ranging from 32s 6d down to 27s Od, with 2Ss 9d and 29s now being bid for good sized carriers. Compared with former sears, these rates look attractive, but with freights weak all over the world, some dealers are of the opinion that a still further reduction may be secured before many ships are actually needed. The Eastern market was a shade firm er 5 esterday. the advance of c in Chicago be ing the greatest move made by that market for several days. That the American crop is not exactly in trim for a record-breaking yield Is dally becoming more apparent. Recent con firmation of unfavorable reports in one of the great Winter-wheat states is found in the fol lowing ofilcial crop report for March for Ohio: "The Winter has not been extremely severe. There has been no serious alternates freezing any thawing, so the wheat roots have not been upheaved. There has been an average of about five weeks of snow protection, which, of course, was favorable, rbut. notwithstanding these ap parently favorable conditions, the wheat has declined rather than progressed. The estimated average from correspondents' returns shows a condition of only 02 per cent, 10 per cent less than on January 1. The snow has disappeared from the fields, but there is no evidence -of great wheat life. Some fields show perfectly bare J of growth. Other fields show the wheat brown and top frozen, while few Indicate that healthy green that should appear under favor able conditions after the disappearance of snow. Some correspondents note that the wheat roots are apparently good, and if this be true generally, the plant, with a favorable March and April, may most of It take on new life and renewed growth. In which case condi tions should show a marked rise by the next report; otherwise, still more fatal results will likely be shown. Present conditions make it almost impossible to foretell, with any degree of certainty, what results will be, and we must wait for further developments." September -rsjj sold early In liberal amounts, and yesterday's small gain was soon wiped out. The first bit of decisive news was the report of 023,000 bushels sea board clearances. Thjs gave a decided snap to the market for a time and resulted in an upturn in prices. The early short talent cov ered, and there was some fair buvlng on tho anticipation of a bull turn before delivery day. Receipts continue very light, and crop reports In some instances have been rather unsatis factory. The general tenor of the market after the extreme early dullness was much Improved, though the advance was trivial. May wheat opened 0c to a shade lower, at 71t7Hc eased to 71c and rallied quickly to 7lc The close was firm. May c higher, at 7l71c Corn started in again today on the down-hill road. NEW TORK, April 8. The effect of yes terday's flury on the money market was dissi pated today, and an aggressive leadership was developed. This leadership seemed to remain with the Western men, who took hold of the market late last week. There was some evi dence that these forces had been recrultd from othr sources, while their position was stronger by reason of the shaking, off of a weak follow ing by yesterday's reaction. The. extension of the short interest during yesterday's decline was also a technical factor ot strength In today's; market. , The reassurance of the speculative element early movement of prices. In fact, there was considerable wavering and uncertainty on the early movement of prices. I fact, there was not much Interest In the market up to noon, outside of the persistent absorption of Louis ville & Nashville, and the sharp advance in Amalgamated Copper, apparently a continua tion, of yesterday's move. Louisville & Nash ville proved the ceatral figure of tho mar ket by its aggressive advance and was the dominating factor in the broadening demand for stocks. The dealings on the stock were on an. enormous scale, and there were Indications that the Western contingent of speculators "was reinforced on the buying side by a well known operator who only recently returned from a long trip to recuperate his health. The explanations offered for the rise were mostly on the nature ot surmises on the part of the speculators. The reported acquisition of the Atlanta, Knoxville & Northern Railway was believed to be the preliminary to active Incursion Into new territory. "'The belief was professed that the new issue of $5,000,000 of stock for the purpose of this purchase already has been marketed, thus freeing the market from the future offerings of it. The aggressive policy undertaken by the company gave rise to J conjectures as to the possibilities of the estab-9 usnnient ot a community ot interest on tbe ter ritory, concerned. Hllnols Central and South ern Railway preferred were benefited by sym pathy. The movement spread into the South, western stocks and SL Paul, but Union Pa cific Southern Pacific and Atchison were IrtUe effected by the movement. There was & general movement .In the Van- derbilts of from 103 points, and a large num ber of minor stocks, of which the Wisconsin Central stocks were most conspicuous, were vigorously advanced. The list of minor in dustrials affected was as large as has recently been the rule. The Westlnghouse Electric stocks made sensational advances of 144 for the common and 15 tor the first preferred, on the strength of an analog with tho history of General Electric The whole market gave way on tho profit-taking, which developed In the last hour, and the principal active stocks were carried back from 102 points. The market closed easy. The rate for call loans today held firm at 506 per cent. It was believed that this rate would check future shipments of, gold., and this as surance was a considerable relief to senti ment. The calling of loans yesterday seemed to have strengthened the situation of the banks so far that the feeling In the money market today was much quieter. The bond market was rather quiebut Arm.
