Movements, as a. "Whole, AVere Trlv Inl mill InconNeeiuciitial. NEW YOItK. Jan. 31. The market today re flected the discouragement of operators over the persistent determination of tho outside public and the Inrge money interests to refrain from speculation in stocks. The failure of suc cessive news developments to induce any in terest In the. speculation causes increasing neglect, even on the part of the professional operators. There were some notable individual movments today, but the market as a wholo was trivial and Inconsequential. The most conspicuous movement was in Delaware, Lack awanna : AYestcra. which rose by rapid stages, making a new hlch record at each stage, to 2fil. It was expected that the an nual statement would be Issued today, and the street forecast cf earnings Is of a rate of l(Vff20 per cent- The rate was withheld from publication, but the directors were in session. FINANCIAL NEWS j Rock Island made a notable advance of S'i i points on light dealings, the market supply of this stock being scarce. The Increase of Moore representatives In the directorate, and the extension of common interests In the com pany and some of the most influential New York banks and trust companies, were cited as motives for the advance. The price of the I stock passed that of St. Paul, but fell back. mucijuiu iinseeo, alter t-any weanncss, iron 3H over last and the preferred 4 on account of the advance in the price of linseed oil. Southern Pacific led the market in point of activity, but its narrow price movement indi cated active profit-taking, which carried it be low last night's level. Tho speculation con tinued very active in Amalgamated Copper, which rose li, lost It all, and then rose 2Vi again at the close. The arrival in this countrj of a director of the Rio Tintoa Company, sup posed to be for the purpose of forming a work ing agreement with the Amalgamated Com pany, and the continued rUe in the price of copper were the motives of the speculation. Sugar continued depressed because of fears that the duties on Culrn sugars would be maintained, and People's Gas suffcreel a sharp break without explanation. There was an act H'e demand late in the day for Reading, but with only slight effect on the price. Colorado & Southern stocks were bought on talk of an Increase In the dividend on the first preferred. Mexican National was strong by reason of re ports of absorption by Southern Pacific Lake Erie & Western prefcrreMi rose 5 points. To morrow's bank statement is exacted to be strong. Bonds were less active today and were irreg ular. Total Fales. 54.050.000. United State refunding 2 declined i, and the 4s, coupon. xt per cent on the last call. Tlic nny' Trnnnnctloitft.
