XEW YORIC STOCK MAIIKET. Outburst of Active Liquidation, In "WIilcli Stocks Suffered. KEW TORK. May 6. The prolonged llstless ness on the stock exchange gave way to an outburst of active liquidation today, and prices suffered severely as a result. In the rallrjad list Josses between 1 and 2 points are the rul and In many active stocks they exceed that. Stocks in which bull manipulation was pu slsted In. in the face of depression, naturally suffered the most. Baltimore & Ohio sleeks were foremost in that class, jhe common los ing over C points, and closing at the lowctt. while the preferred Is 3i lower than yester day's close. Missouri Pacific was another example In the xune class, and declined t$s en very heavy drillings, in spite ef spot buying on a scale-down. The sharp break in prices came generally as a surprise, and the room traders, contrasting the wide movement of prices lor the small effect produced ty tnelr best efforts lor a week past. c-e Incline to look lor an explanation to the arrival vifhln reach of telegraph facilities of the most suc cessful bear leader of the past year, who land ed yesterday in England, after a week at t ta. But there was nothing in the trading that would make a bear raid sufficiently account for the action In the market. Llquldat'jn of leng stocks was clearly in evidence. The luge of ferings In one or two stocks in the railroad group, which were a feature in and which were believed to be the letting go of speculative accounts by largo interests, were evidently the forerunners of today's liquidation. The weekly statistics ol railroad traffic, made up J at Chicago, and possibly held after yesterday's market was closed, were the sufflcient explana tion of the selling. They demonstrate con clusively that the reactionary tendency of busi ness has begun to have a marked effect on railroad traffic as it was feared It trouiL It Is apparent that many olfers of rallrtad ttocks have been held In the hope that lh toluir.ft of railroad traffic would not be materially affect ed. But -with large declines both on receipts l and in Chicago, and with freight officials of ttstem lines complaining about tin light traf fic, large holders -of stocks tlireateued the market today, and .round I.t bidden to uhs them. The bear traders, when they saw how things were going. Joined in the selling, and their buy ing at declines to cover their short contracts gavo the only occasional -checks to the down ward course of prices. The necessity wnich, Is now clear of a reduction of prices rhrcuiii out the business world, In order to induce suf ficient consumptive demand to absorb the lank ly Increasing -production, tntvo occa&lon lor depressing opinions 'lor the outlook. Fears are felt that a 'readjustment of wages and a course of labor troubles may be the result Not much attention was paid to the question of further gold exports, as the money market shows no effect of apprehin-rion on that score, nor on that of the cessation of the outo to the market from the sub'ixa.iury. The con tinuing ease of money. In face of these lactcrs Is regarded as corroborating he fears of busi ness reaction. The oomprun no outlay lor Improvements by some of he rAllraad com panies, and lor' extension of control ar sLx beginning to be looked upon with app-ehotlon, and to affect, unfavorably, the stocks cf the companies. Steel & Wlro and rdrral Steel were rather notable exceptions ft the gercial weakness on account of the excessive liquida tion already effected in them. Tha Commer-Jal Ad vertiser's London flnanaal caolcrom sayf: There -was universal weakness in the markets today on forced liquid itlin, chiefly rn West Australians. Trouble was reported In ILs Glasgow market, and funlj --ere weak on ex pectation of an early loan by the Ixndon Coun ty Council on favorable terms. Americans were a big feature throughout. They opened nervous under parity, and New Tork prices dropped until the afternoon, when they he came very soft here on New York offers. The fall was accelerated In the street. Talk of American gold shipments to begin this week was persistent. Tlntos and Anacondas -were flat, fearing that metal troubles in America will spread to copccr. Honey -was In moderate demand. ' Chicxijro Grain and Produce. , CHICAGO. May 8. Most of the day wheat was a bit "advanced over yesterday's closing figures. The opening was Arm because there was more steadiness in cables than had been expected, and because there was heavy rain In tho Southwest, where it is not wanted, and none in the Northwest, where It is reported to be needed. There was a period of depression following the opening, the com weakness being the principal motive, but later the mar ket rallied. The rally was helped by Brad street's decrease In the world's visible and by a lair cash demand. July left off with an Im provement o Ufi-a The corn market was dull and heavy. Tha opening showed a fractional decline, and Im mediately afterward the market rallied some on a little -Epurt in the demand, but this was speedily overcome by pressure of long stuff, and the market sagged. There was also short selling, and considerable amounts came out on stop-loss orders. The cash demand was slow, and there seemed to bo little support coming from the bull crowd. The close was heavy, with a loss of c for July. Oats were weak, in sympathy with corn, and trade was rather dull. July closed VtGXc lower. Provisions were weak most of the session, but towards the end steadied on buying by an Influential packer. July pork closed 15c lowrr, lard 2c down and ribs a shade. JAMAICA POLITICS. . Delegates Wll Fight lor Political Freedom. KINGSTON", Jamaica, Mar L Tha latest development In the political dead lock here is tho meeting of the elected members of the Legislative Council, -which took place April 25. At this meeting of tho people's representatives, a definite policy and line of conduct were decided upon. They agreed: 1 To adhere to their resolved purpose to take no part In the deliberations1 of tho Legislative Council until the four ex tra nominated members are withdrawn. 2 To send a delegation to England to tight the battle of political freedom for Jamaica in the House of Commons. 3 In tho event of failure, to offer them selves as candidates at the next general election, and (if returned) to persist in the policy they have adopted, that is, to refuse to take part In the work of the Legislative Council, and thus force Mr. Chamberlain's hand; in other words, to compel him either to carry out his threat to restore crown government pure and simple, or to -withdraw the obnoxious four members from the Legislative Council and restore the status quo ante. Albert ."Watts, United States Consul In Jamaica, has Just received! information from "Cairo that the Khedive of Egypt has conferred on him the Imperial Order of the Osmanll, of the third class, In. recognition of services rendered while he was on the staff of the United States Consul-General. In Egypu Mr. "Watts was recommended for tho distinction by the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Boutros Pasha. The rules of the United States Consular Service prevent Mr. Watts from wearing the insignia of the order until his retirement. Advices come from St. Mary, one of the centers of the fruit industry, .saying the trade has taken a bright turn, and roads are made lively for four days every week by tho large number of persons taking bananas to tho many shipping places to dispose of the fruit. There were no less than five companies purchasing fruit last week. There Is a fair supply of bananas in the market, but most of them are of indifferent grades, the fields not having yet fully recovered from the storm of October last. The ruling prices are from $23 to $60 for six to nine hand bunches. Study of Indian Life. CHICAGO. May S.
