The wool market remains a little quiet, considering that this Is the season when sreat actlrlty Is expected, hut growers are not permitting the dull market to hamper their purchasing power, as money Is quite plentiful. In the produce markets there Is still a very -weak feeling In potatoes, and some stock Is celling at very low figures. Butter U very weak, and will not clean up, even at the re cent reduction. Eggs -are firmer, and, while It li difficult to work them for more than lHe tn the local market, there Is an outside de mand, from which Vfi better can be realized. The street was well cleaned up on vegetables, hut the steamer due last evening has a liberal consignment, which will be on the street this morning. , Hank Clearlntra. Exchanges. Bstsncea, Portland . XEW YOnK STOCK MARKET. Weak Close, Generally Below Mon day's Level. NEW TOIUC. April 10.-Tho movement of prices In today's stock market largely repre sented a contest of speculative force for su premacy. The forces of reaction finally pre vailed, and the market closed decidedly weak at a level generally below last night's close. This result was achieved after many vlclssl . tudes and extreme Irregularity, but the mere fact of the presence of an aggressive bear clique In tho market served aa a deterrent to the buying demand from outsiders, which had constituted the underlying strength of the market- Commission houses report a large falling-off In the volume of orders, which hae made the market open for many days with a ruth to buy. and which served to conveniently absorb the profit-taking sales of the profes- v slonal element. This class of orders has either been withdrawn or has been placed nt a level of prices below that now existing. The operators for the decline have not yet succeeded In bringing out any very heavy vol ume of offerings, but they -work In the .confi dence they will reach etop-loss orders, which will precipitate a sudden, drop all around. Their efforts were contested today by poor operations in a number of stocks, and the con tinued demand from London for stocks was against them. But the operators for a rise seemed to lose courage toward the close of the day. and realizing In stocks which had shown strength was very general. These Included in a - the railroad list particularly the Baltimore. A Ohio itocks, Missouri Pacific and other SAm- FINANCIAL NEWS westere roads, Norfolk & Western and some of the coalers. The Industrials and specialties were extreme ly active and Irregular, under the Influence of special causes. Sugar rallied sharply from an early decline on the announcement that the company's principal, competitor had advanced the price of refined sugars to a parity. The stock sold off again with the general weakness of the market. Third Avenue shot up nearly 10 points on the announcement that Its bond Issue bad been placed. A long-standing short Interest was forced to take losses and close out. after which the stock relapsed somewhat. Realizing by the Brooklyn Transit pool forced the stock down 44 points from the early high leveL The metal stocks were under bear pres sure, especially Steel i Wire. The bears circulated rumors that difficulties had been encountered In the projected listing of the stock on the London Stock Exchange Continental Tobacco suffered from rumors of a poor showing of earnings to be made In the annual report, which It expected tomorrow. The Pacific stocks suffered especially from bear pressure and realizing, and the grangers were somen hat affected- by the forecast of the Government crop report, which had a. bullish effect on the wheat market. Tbtj signs of dis couragement on the part of the manipulators for the advance, accentuated the reactlonarr tendency as the day progressed, and some sharp net losses tn railroad stocks are the re sult. A further rise In sterling exchange to within a fraction of the gold-export point led to a dis cussion of the prospect of an outward move ment of gold. The continued ease of money here would favor such' a movement, bat the taking up of the Installment of the British loan, vhlch stiffened today's money market In London, may be followed by a relaxation in money rates there and a sympathetic response In sterling exchange here. The bond market was moderately quiet and prlcu changes were Irregular. Total sales were 32.SuO,(iOo. A slope That They Will Be Spared the Canal Appeals. DALLAS. April 9. (To the Editor.) The time is fast approaching when appeals will likely be made to tbe small remnant of Indian War veterans that have not received their passport to "that land that is fairer than day'.' to cast their united vote for men for the next Oregon Legisla ture who will vote for McBrlde or Mitch ell for the Senate, so that our claims for pensions will be passed; also to vote for the return of the outgoing Representatives in the House, so that they may be able to complete their good work of helping the old Indian War veteran to secure his Just claims as a pensioner. Now. what I want to suggest Is that, as our ranks are reduced from 7C0) to about 700, and as the most of us are graduates In the school of adversity and hardships, as we lived on fresh horssmcat for some time while in the service, and got our pay 10 years afterward, in green backs, which brought CO cents on the dollar; and as the majority of U3 are ap proaching so near the ranks of our chums who have reached their home which is built on high, and na our wants on this earth will be few, and not long: therefore the present campaign be left "free from all appeals in behalf of any Senator or Representative, so that the Indian War veteran will not suffer the pangs of dis appointment, that have so often befallen bWitANHOOD WVJWlxr, tbeprecripiJoaofa ria-Sfm . 1. .a.
