THE 1TOH2sIjS'G- OREGOSTIASv THUKSDAX; JASHJABY 3, 189o. RUSH OF A GRIZZLY. An Idulio Beast Tkat Had Carried Trio Ballets in. His Lures. A volley of ordinary rifle balls cannot "be -warranted to arrest the rush of a grizzly from a. distance of anything above 30 steps. In the Saw Tooth range. 20 miles north of Boise, Idaho, a party of hunters from Fort Banner, two years ago, emptied their "Winchesters Into a mountain bear trotting- down a rocky glen, which finally obstructed their view of his retreat, though a number of parallel tracks cf blood convinced them that more than one of their shots must have taken effect. Iast summer the same bear was chased and killed near Fayette lake, at the north end of the range, and an au topsy, conducted by a military surgeon, revealed the feet that two bullets of 38-callber had become incrusted in the brute's lungs, while three others had lodged between his hide and his shoulder bones. In nine out of ten cases, says a writer In the Glo"be-Democrat. the first experi ence of the demoniac powers of saltpeter is, however, sufficient to cure a grizzly from his penchant for lowland raids and turn him Into a Sierra dweller as ex clusive almost as a Kocky mountain goat or the yellow bear of the HImllaya high lands. The total area of those upland haunts is nearly ten times that of the European Alps, and only their dreariest summit regions are entirely inhospitable to a guest with the omnivorous appetite of the mountain bear. Besides, remnants of the once numerous herds of elk, sheep and deer, there are always hares, coneys, gophers, mountain grouse, and in sum mer a great variety of berries and nuts. Wild plums, too, are found on sunny slopes as far north as Wyoming, and the California Sierras abound with edible pine seeds almost as sweet as filberts. With such a menu the grizzly will reach a weight of 1800 pounds without ever levy ing contributions on the valley farmer, and the support of his progeny is besides facilitated by the diminutive slzotof the new-born cubs. A week after birth the baby grizzly weighs only two pounds, and has his eyes open and learned to use them for self-supporting purposes before his dietetic exigencies can possibly incon venience his mother. The gray wolf, his chief competitor for the animal food sup ply of the Sierras, is found occasionally at an elevation of 6000 feet, but higher up the mountain bear has no rival at all, and will probably survive the westward progress of culture for the next thousand years, even if the 20th century should wit ness the time predicted by Professor Everett Taylor when the game resources of the plains shall have become so scant that sportsmen will crouch in a rifle-pit all day to get a shot at a prairie dog. A CLERGYMAN INVENTOR. His Latest Device Ik an Ingenious Fifth. "Wheel for Busglcs. One of the most interesting characters that visits Newcastle frequently is Rev. J. C. Paden, the inventive clergyman, whose various mechanical contrivances have long been In general use all over the state, says the Newcastle Guardian. He said he was now located in Petersburg, O., but formerly lived in Newcastle. He is now over Co years of age. but well pre served, and his busy mind is still at work planning new contrivances. Rev. Paden says he was born in Ashtabula county, O. He received a common-school educa tion and afterward studied theology. While he was living in Newcastle he in vented a plow, in which he was assisted by C. C. Sankey, now agent of the Penn sylvania lines. Later on he Invented a harvesting machine which cut, threshed and cleaned grain all at the same time. The machine proved a great benefit in try countries where wheat would not stand to be cut and shocked. A Califor nia man purchased, this Invention after the parent ran outjartd1 madtfa. fortune out of it. The machine is now in general use in California, Arizona, Nevada and other states where the climate lacks sufficient humidity to permit grain to be harvested in the usual manner. His last of many useful inventions Is a fifth wheel for buggies and wagons, which promises to come into general use.
