(Cincinnati Enquirer, Juno 13, 190G.) Tho Douglas school, In Alms place, which is exclusively for colored chil dren, and has only colored teac.iers, will havo manual training and domes tic science equipment installed during tho summer, and, beginning In Sep tember, a larger variety of work In these two departments will be taught than in any other school in the city. Booker T. Washington, principal of tho Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, in a letter replying to ono from Superintendent Dyer, asking for suggestions, says: "Fundamentally, I cannot get away from the Idea that the Ideal system of Industrial work or manual training for any people should be baaed upon a careful Btudy of tho occupations which tho parents and tho people in the community are actually engaged in. If, for example, the parents of tho boys are engaged pretty genorally In woodwork, brickwork, or household work, or the parents of the girls In laundering, cooking, or in nousenom service of any character, I believe that the school should emphasize effi ciency in the Industry in which the parents are successful. When educa tion Is based on such a foundation, one is not running the risk of feeling that the student Is being trained for an occupation which he cannot fol low. To be more specific, the Ideal arrangement for your school, It seems to mo, would be to havo your super intendent of manual training make a careful Investigation and see in what direction the colored peoplo nro actu ally employed In the- neighborhood from which these children come, and then In the school try to bring the very-day industrial life to the peo ple In touch with what will be done in the school. In this way the educa tion is not only made helpful and practical, but secures at once, or should secure .the interest and co operation of the parents." Superintendent of Manual Training Ball, when shown the letter, said: "The suggestions made by Booker Washington are good and valuable, bul Ihorfl Is Koriniia nbtection to carrying them out to the letter. Ills plan would leave children where their parents are, while our object is to broaden their horison and enlarge their field of opportunity.
