The coast had toasty temperatures Saturday, while the Portland metro area hit new highs on Sunday. Since 1953, June in Astoria has typically meant highs of 67 degrees and lows of 53 degrees, according to a data set of daily temperatures. But June’s tem- peratures range all over the place. June 1966 saw a high of 91 degrees on June 15, but this hot day was sandwiched between a 73-degree day and a string of days where tempera- tures hovered in the mid- to high 60s. In 1970, June started off with a bang at 90 degrees the fi rst day of the month. By the time June 24 rolled around, however, daily temperatures had dropped to 60- and even 58 -degree days, and June 24 had a high of only 64 degrees. In June 1995, Astoria hit a high of 92 degrees on June 29, fol- lowed by a comparatively chilly 64 degrees the next day. Last year, the hottest day of June happened early in the month when temperatures hit 87 degrees on June 4. There was less rain, how- ever. June 2016 saw only 2 inches of precipitation total. This June, Astoria hit almost 3 inches for the entire month and average temperatures, both high and low, were several degrees cooler than last June. The cities of Portland, Hill- sboro, Vancouver and Trout- dale all hit record high tem- peratures for Sunday, coming in with 100- to 101-degree days, the National Weather Service reported this morn- ing. The short heat wave ended today with the arrival of clouds and cool marine air. Astoria was also covered in clouds this morning, but it appears Satur- day’s high temperatures at the coast could have been a June record for the city, based on daily temperature data from 1953 to 2015. Astoria cooled down Sunday with a high of 68 and low of 55. Historically, at least since record-keeping began in 1953, temperatures on June 24 have ranged from low 60s to high 80s. In 1953, June 24 was a cool 61-degree day. In 1961, that day was a little warmer at 71 degrees. In the late 1980s — when crack cocaine began to show up increasingly in U.S. cities — June 24 in Astoria hit a high of 76 degrees in 1988 and 87 degrees in 1989. At 12:46 p.m. Saturday, John Carl Dalgren, 38, of Asto- ria, was arrested by the Asto- ria Police Department on the 800 block of Erie Avenue and charged with attempted assault on a public safety offi cer, harassment and resisting arrest. The offi cer drove him to Columbia Memorial Hospital, though Dalgren said he wanted to go to the jail instead. While on the hospital campus, Dalgren allegedly grabbed the offi cer, stomped him on his foot and punched him in the chest as he again asked to be taken to jail. He then was taken to the Clatsop County Jail, where he allegedly punched a Clatsop County Sheriff’s deputy. June 23, 2017 ROSE, Dawna May Rose, 54, of Seaside, died in Sea- side.
