Astoria Rotary selects Stu- dents of the Month during the school year from the junior and senior classes at Astoria High School and KHS. To be selected, students must be in good standing in school and involved in school and community activities. The Daily Astorian The Astoria Rotary honored two Knappa High School seniors, Chelsea Sapp and Cody Hobbs, as Students of the Month for March. Both students received a Rotary Certificate and a gift cer- tificate from The Rusty Cup. Sapp is the Associated Student Body secretary at school, is in the National Honor Society and par- ticipates in cross country and track and field. She serves on the Oregon Military Teen Panel, and volunteers at the Warming Center and with a blood drive in Knappa. Austen and his wife, Patricia, right, were honored at a luncheon marking his five decades as a Free- mason hosted by Occident Lodge No. 48, Free and Accepted Masons of Washington in Ilwaco. Austen joined the Masons in California in 1963 and was a member of Sunnyside Lodge No. 163 Masons in Portland. He lives in Long Beach, Wash. The Astoria School District Board recog- nized Hampton Affili- ates, Lois Perdue, plant manager at the Warren- ton site, and Cliff Tut- tle of Special Projects at their March 9 meeting. The school district has partnered with Hamp- ton Affiliates to obtain a Career and Technical Education grant for over $280,000 through the Oregon Department of Education that provides Astoria High School students with technology and engineering skills. In addition, with Tuttle and Perdue’s leadership, Hamp- ton Affiliates has cre- ated a summer intern- ship for four to six AHS students to provide them with valuable job-seek- ing skills, work experi- ence and the opportu- nity to learn technical skills needs at a lumber mill site.
