Gulls back in groove after 15-day layoff The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — After more than a two-week layoff, the No. 1-ranked Seaside boys basketball team was back on the floor Thursday for a makeup game against Newport at the Gulls’ Nest. The Cubs managed to keep it a lit- tle closer than the previous meeting, but the Gulls improved their season record to 9-0 overall with an 83-67 win. Seaside defeated Newport in the Holiday Classic tournament Dec. 17, 87-54. “At times, we looked like the team we were before the break, but at other times we looked like a team that hasn’t played in 15 days,” said Sea- side coach Bill Westerholm. “I think that’s the longest break we’ve ever had. We were just out of sync offen- sively a lot of the time.” Chase Januik scored 21 points and Jackson Januik added 17 for the Gulls, who were able to build a 69-50 lead through three quarters. The Cubs made eight of their 11 3-pointers in the second half, while Attikin Babb (12 points) and Hunter Thompson (10) also scored in double figures for Seaside. The Gulls — who were originally scheduled to host Cascade Thursday — play at North Marion tonight. he Clatsop Splash was a split Thursday afternoon at the Astoria Aquatic Center. Tuning up for the stretch run of the season, the Seaside and Astoria swim teams met for the final time before districts, Feb. 10-11 at Astoria. And the Cowapa rivals split the team scores in their annual dual meet. Seaside held off the Lady Fishermen in the final event to edge Astoria in the team score, 80-78; while the Astoria boys used their depth to post an 86-75 win over the Gulls. Seaside won six of the 11 events on the boys’ side, which included two wins for Luke Lil- jenwall, who timed a 25.33 sec- onds in the 50-yard freestyle, and 56.58 in the 100-yard free- style. He also swam a leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay (along with Brad Rzewnicki, Will Garvin and James Kennedy), which nipped Astoria at the wall in 1:59.20, to Astoria’s 1:59.97; and Seaside’s same four won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.46. Joshua Shipley had the big day for Astoria, with wins in the 100-yard butterfly (59.10) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.81), and the foursome of Riley Q. Cameron, Elias Sim- mons, Thayne Covert and Ship- ley won the final event, the 400- yard freestyle relay, in 3:57.15 to clinch the team victory. Simmons (200-yard freestyle) and Covert (500-yard freestyle) also recorded individual wins. In the girls’ meet, Seaside’s Kendy Lin, Cadyn Carr, Maya McGill and Summer Spell opened with a win in the 200 medley relay, and followed with wins for McGill (200 freestyle), Lin (200 individual medley and the back- stroke), Spell (500 freestyle) and Kimberly Mella (50 freestyle). The Lady Fishermen picked up wins from Megan Schacher (butterfly) and Kendal Gustafson (100 freestyle and the breast- stroke), while Jenna Travers, Claire Albright, Taylor Atkins and Kira Worwood teamed up to win the 200 freestyle relay. The team title was up for grabs heading into the 400 freestyle relay, in which the Gulls built a sizable lead after two legs, before Schacher put Astoria in front heading into the final leg. And McGill was able to regain the lead for the Gulls, who fin- ished in 4:39.42, to Astoria’s 4:51.97.
