5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2016 Fear Factor: Americans scared of their presidential options By LISA LERER and EMILY SWANSON Associated Press WASHINGTON — The vast majority of Americans say they are afraid of at least one of the two major candidates — Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump — winning the White House a remarNaEle ¿nding that reÀects an unsettled nation unhappy with its choice. Eighty-one percent of Americans say they would feel afraid following the election of one of the two polarizing pol- iticians, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll. That includes a quarter who say it doesn’t matter who wins: they’re scared of both. Three-quarters of voters say their pick for president is moti- vated by a desire to cast their Election Day ballot against Clinton or Trump, more than those who say they’re voting for the candidate who shares their positions on the issues or is the most quali¿ed to hold the of¿ce. Said Dennis Fernandez, 67, of Florence, Arizona: “If Hil- lary Clinton won, I’d probably consider suicide. I’m de¿nitely not a fan.” And Lawrence James, 55, of Durham, North Carolina, said: “If Trump wins, well, we’ve already checked out Malta and New Zealand. I’m just not comfortable that he’s not going to make rushed, uninformed decisions.” Deep unease On the eve of the sum- mer’s political conventions, at which the general election campaign of¿cially begins, the latest AP-GfK ¿ndings under- score the deep sense of unease that is sharpening the political divide in America and shap- ing an already nasty race for president. So much so that notable numbers of Americans even hold negative views about the candidate they want to win: 14 percent of both Trump’s and Clinton’s supporters say they’re backing a candidate they don’t like. The survey was conducted after the fatal police shootings of two black men by police of¿cers last week in Louisiana and Minnesota, and mostly after a sniper seeking revenge for those slayings killed ¿ve Poll: Fear permeates electorate Large numbers of American adults say they would feel afraid if either national party front-runner wins the White House, according to a new AP-GfK poll. The poll found Americans hold resoundingly negative opinions of both candidates. Fifty-seven percent have an unfavorable view of Clinton, compared to 37 percent who have a favorable view. Six- ty-three percent have a nega- tive view of Trump, compared to the 31 percent who think well of him. “I really don’t love either of the candidates. What do they say? It’s a choice between hot and hell,” said Annette Scott, 70, of Monmouth County, New Jersey. Scott, a retiree, said she’s seeking answers to the coun- tries problems — and fail- ing to ¿nd them from either candidate. “Please give me solutions. Whether they are workable or not workable, at least propose them so everybody can talk about it,” she said. cans said they would feel afraid and 48 percent say they’d feel regret if Trump wins the White House. Just 22 percent said they’d be proud and 26 percent excited should America pick Trump on Election Day. Clinton doesn’t fare much better: If she’s elected pres- ident, 48 percent say they would be afraid and 46 percent say they would feel regret- ful. Only 27 percent of Amer- icans would be proud of that choice, and 26 percent would be excited at her election. Half of Clinton’s own sup- porters consider her only slightly or not at all honest, and more than a third say she’s only slightly or not at all lik- able. Overall, only a quarter of Americans think Clinton is at least somewhat honest. The timing is aimed at energiz- ing Republicans ahead of next week’s Republican convention in Cleveland. Shortly after noon, Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort wrote on Twit- ter that the decision “will be made in the near future.” Each of Trump’s top con- tenders would add signi¿- cant political experience to the GOP ticket. Trump, a political novice, has said for weeks that he wanted a run- ning mate who could help him work with Congress. Beyond their political backgrounds, the ¿nalists bring different strengths to the ticket. Pence, 57, is a steady, staunch conservative who would help calm nervous Republican wary of Trump’s impulsive style. He served six terms in Congress before becoming Indiana gover- nor. He also has deep ties to evangelical Christians and other conservatives, particu- larly after signing a law last year that critics said would have allowed businesses to deny service to gay people for religious reasons. Trump took notice of Pence during the Indiana primary, noting that the gov- ernor had high praise for him despite endorsing one of his rivals. By JULIE PACE AP White House Correspondent WASHINGTON — Don- ald Trump is on the verge of picking his vice presidential running mate, with top con- tenders told to expect a deci- sion as early as Thursday afternoon. On Trump’s shortlist: Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, according to people familiar with the candidate’s thinking. Pence quickly exited a speaking event in India- napolis Thursday morning without taking questions from reporters. His staff has not released details of any other planned appearances Thursday. The New York Times and the Indianapolis Star have reported that Pence is Trump’s pick. The Trump campaign, however, has not made an of¿cial announcement. All three of the ¿nalists have had extensive conver- sations with Trump and his family in recent days. Gingrich told The Asso- ciated Press he was expect- ing to hear from Trump one way or the other some- time after 1 p.m. The for- mer Georgia congressman praised Trump for running a “very fair, open process” and said he looked forward to learning the business- man’s decision. Gingrich later posted on Facebook that he would VBS 2 July 0 19 - 22 1 6 th Registration Fee: nd $ 15 per child $ 25 per family 503-325-1761 astoriacentralcityvbs@gmail.com facebook.com/astoriacentralcityvbs LISTINGS T HURSDAY E VENING L AP ‘I really don’t love either of the candidates. In recent weeks, Clinton has started to acknowledge that many voters simply do not trust her. “I personally know that I have work to do on this front,” she said in Chicago last month. “You can’t just talk someone into trusting you. You’ve got to earn it.” Still, for Clinton, there was some good news in the poll: nearly two-thirds of Americans think she’ll win the election. Forty-seven percent of Trump’s supporters consider him only slightly or not at all civil, 39 percent say he’s slightly or not at all likable and 31 percent say he’s only slightly or not at all quali- ¿ed. Of those backing him, 14 percent consider him at least somewhat racist. But even while they voice concerns about their own candidate, vast majori- ties of voters see the alterna- tive as far worse. Eighty per- cent of Trump supporters and three-quarters of Clinton back- ers say a major reason for their support is opposition to the other candidate. The coalitions backing the candidates have remained largely unchanged from the primary race, with Clinton doing better among women and minority voters. Women are more likely than men to have a favorable opinion of Clinton, 40 percent to 33 percent. Sixty-eight per- cent of blacks, 52 percent of Hispanics and 28 percent of whites have a favorable view of Clinton. Men are more likely than women to have a favorable opinion of Trump, 34 percent to 28 percent. Forty percent of whites, 13 percent of His- panics and 7 percent of blacks have a favorable opinion of Trump.
