Spring Medicine There is no other season when good medicine la so much needed as in the Spring. The blood is impure, weak and impoverished a condition indicated by pimples and other eruptions on the face and body, by deficient vitality, loss of appetite, lack of strength, and want of animation! Hood's Sarsapcrilla and Pills Make the blood pure, vigorous and rich, create appetite, givo vitality, str.ngth end animation, and cure all eruptions. Have the whole family begin to take them today. "Hood's Sarsaparllla has been used In oar family for some time, and always with good results. Last spring I was all run down and got a bottle of It, and as usual received great benefit." "Education," said the impassioned orator, "begins at home." "That's where you're off," said the calm spectator. Probably the most startling feature of the revelations regarding the "get-rich-quick" concerns is the showing marie as to the miinbvr auJ character of the victims. Those who "Invested" In such concerns were confined to no particular class. Men and women, city residents nntl country people, small salaried clerks and fairly well estab lished business men. doctors, lawyers and even bauk ollici-rs seem to have found the prospect of Immediate en richment too alluring to ba resisted. Caution, goo J judgment, Intelligent un derstanding of the possibilities of gain In legitimate enterprises are qualities which no doubt many of the Investors possess In the ordinary transactions of life, but they did not suffice to protect the victims against temptation. The extent to which the turf con cerns carried on their operations among persons already possessing moderate means and at least average Intelligence is suceestlve of the erowth t J. ARNOLD, THE OET-BICU-QCICK of mnna getting. It would seem that many Americans have Income so profoundly Impressed with the possibility of making fortunes In n hurry that they are bound to be discontented with all ordinary profits. The oft-repeated stories of the Carnegies, Rockefellers, Schwabs and Morgans are full of insinuating suggestion as to the ease with which vast sums , may be acquired. The man who may be earning an income of from $1,000 to $1,200 a year has been forced to recognize the fact that men who are "on the Inside" In financial enterprises make many times that sum In n week, a day, an hour, even. He learns how by a turn of the hand, an Instant's decision in action, a hasty word with a stock broker, a considerable fortune maybe secured. The other side of the story, the losses of the foolish speculator, the fleecing of the lamb, he rarely hears about. i-ersous wirn u craving tor immediate weaitn snomu rm tnemselves once for nil of the Idea that extravagant profits on Investments are any more possible for the small speculator than they ever were. Occasionally an enterprise is Inaugurated which may wiu big returns in a legitimate way, dui m me majority or sucu cases the promoters do not lot strangers In "on the ground floor." The small Investor would do well to keen It in mind that where an extravagant profit Is promised him the venture Into which he is asked to put his money is probably either a very risky and Illegitimate gamble or else a plain swindle. "Of nil the dUBcultles with which the amateur photographer has to contend in his search for novel subjects for his I camera," recently remarked Custodian : Spencer of he New York Aquarium, to in reporter of the Times,. "that of snap shotting living fish in the exhibiting tanks here at the aquarium is about the worst on the list. "To the unsophisticated," continued Mr. Spencer, "it seems an easy matter to make a good picture of the larger fishes as they swim lazily about their tanks. The water nppenrs clean and the light seems all that could be de sired, and almost every day some en thusiastic but deluded kodak field makes the round of the aqunriutn 'snap ping the most desirable groups. "But it Is not always the amateurs who are fooled," went on Mr. Spencer. "Quite recently a reporter on one of the illustrated dailies came here, ac companied by a staff photographer, and nsked permission to make some pictures to Illustrate a story. Of course, per mission was granted, and, although warned as to the fruitlessness of his undertaking, the protographer pro ceeded with his work and departed confident that he had several good views, but I was by no means surprised when shortly afterwards a messenger from the paper dashed In and inquired If I could not loan It some photographs. "Now, when we wish photographs, we remove the fish from the exhibition tanks to an aquarium specially con structed for photographing purpoes," Indicating by a motion a group of long and extremely narrow aquariums rest Chinamen in the States. It Is estimated that there are about 100,000 Chinamen in the United Statis and that 20,000 of them are ln San Francisco. There is a considerable Chinese colony ln New York and there are small colonies ln Philadelphia, Bos ton and Chicago. Though they do not belong to the educated classes, 115 per cent of them can read and write. A dally paper ln the Chinese language Is published in San Francisco and an other In New York. Nearly all the Chinamen In the Uni ted States come from the single prov ince of Kwong-Tung, the most popu lous of the eighteen provinces of the Chinese empire. Its capital lb Canton. Six counties of this province send out most of the emigrants to the United States. The Inhabitants of this prov ince have for centuries been more ad venturous and fonder of traveling than the rest of their fellow countrymen and they are always ready to face danger if there Is a good chance of profit. ' Th(re are some people so particular that they think a widower has quit mourning If he brushes his clothes. There Is always some compensation In finding others who have it harder. One of the essentials of the happy homes of to-day Is a fund of Information as to right living and the best methods of promoting health and happiness. With proper knowledge, each hour of recreation, of enjoyment and of effort may be made to contribute to that end and are of not less value than the using of the most wholesome foods and the selecting of the best medicinal agents when needed. With the well-informed, medicinal agents are used only when nature needs assistance and while the importance of cleansing the system effectually, when bilious or constipated, has long been known, yet until within recent years it was necessary to resort to oils, salts, extracts of roots, barks and other cathartics which were found to be objectionable and to call for constantly Increased quantities. Then physicians having learned that the most excellent laxative and carminative principles were to be found in certain plants, principally in the leaves, the California Fig Syrup Co. discovered a method of obtaining such principles in their purest condition and of presenting them with pleasant and refreshing liquids in the form most acceptable to the system ana tne remeoy ueumic Syrup of Figs as figs were used, with the plants, in making it, because of their agreeable taste. This excellent remedy is now rapidly coming into universal use as the best of family laxatives, because it is simple and wholesome and cleanses and sweetens the system effectually without disturbing the natural functions and without unpleasant after effects and its use may be discon tinued when It is no longer required. All who would enjoy good health and its blessings should remember that it is the one remedy which physic'ans and parents well-informed approve and recommend and use and which they and their little ones alike enjoy, because of its pleasant flavor, its gentle action and its beneficial effects. Syrup of Figs is for sale by all reliable druggists, at the regular price of fifty cents per bottle, in original packages only, having the name of the remedy Syrup of Figs-and the full name of the Company California Fig Syrup Co. printed on the front of every package. 0 IvOulsviUo.
