The road through the mountain I truly a wonderful work of engineering, but to my mind the rvnlc element I quite cousplcuou by It absence. We go through, I think by count. IS tunnel of long and short duration, with tall hill on both side but sometime the hilt slope away to a farm house and outbuilding. At Castor Creek we ran onto a sld Ing and waited for a long train ot huge log to pass, going toward Portland The train lost time going to the utu mil Before we got to Wedeherg, little slutlon In the wood, and for about tea mile, we passed through stretch of fine forest, standing straight and mag is tie, where the hand of man ha not yet despoiled It beau ty. but mill are springing up her and there and lime will undobtedly lay the mighty monarch down and future generation will see the beau ties of the bare hills. At Cochran we begin to go down hill and gain time and at Wheeler, formerly railed Nehalcm, with a num ber of small houses, a itatlon, mill and shanty lunch counter. Soon we passed Xehalem Fail, at that time a sucreailon of little fall about three feet high, but saw flub Jumping In the deeper pool which looked wonderfully tempting to our boy companion. We ran Into a rain storm lasting aliotit nine miles, after which we crossed two Iron brides and the coun try extended out wider, showing com? fortable farm house and outbuildings and other crop (mall as yet, needing sunshine, and nice looking cattle. At Manhatten Beach we got our first alght of the ocean and turned south. passed Lake Lytle, a amall sheet of water of perhaps two acres, which has not been Improved as yet. We passed Rockaway and was surprised to find It quite a little village with cottage to rent and In sight of old ocean.
