Summervillc who with her family, started to Brogan, Malheur county, about tho first of April. Their car had weighed more than they expectel and the excess freight charges were oulte heavr. Mr. Summerville had been qugite sick, being able to work only 12 days since their arrival. There has been a little snow every week. Meat seems to have been quite scarce as she mentioned that they had not had any fresh meat since leaving Tho Dalles. They went to Eastern O- gon upon the recommendation of a son and had hoped to have some of their Molalla neighbors settle near them that there might be a good school as well as homestead privileges. In her letter Mrs. Summervillo says that she could not recommend the country to her friends and that they will try to letve there In the fall, and return cither to The Dalles or Molalla. Mrs. Allen received a letter from her son Lloyd, saying that he had reached Pleasant Home. Idaho, safely End hoped to be a: work soon. He latt Molalla a short time ago. About thirty members of the Ore- pon City Rebel;ah lodge came out by auto to assist the Molalla lodge whun fourteen new members were initiated. For two days and a night last wsek a man seemingly afoot nnd alone, camped right out in the storm near the old shooting gallery. , J. J. Miss Pearl Davis was a Molalla vis itor Saturday from Shaffer's mill, where she has been making her home the past two months with the family of her cousin, Mr. Hunt. Mrs. Combs accompanied her home and remained over Sunday at their home, near the river. A member of the section crew be tween Liberal and Mulino, struck his shovel between the ties while he went for a drink. A car came along unex pectedly, hurling the blade and han dle in different directions, but luckily none of the section crew was hurt. The Mt Angel team won on the Mo lalla diamond last Sunday while play Ing against the Molalla baseball teain. Herman and Spencer of the firm bearing that name have just returned from Seaside, where they recently re established themselves in business. They express themselves as being pleased with their new location. Mrs. Herman and daughter will soon move to their new home. Mrs. Vernon's and Mr. Taylor's Sun day school classes of young people spent from 3 to 8 Saturday evening skating and merry-making at the rink In McFadden t grove. Wienies were the staple part of the refreshments. All the teachers have been reap pointed for the coming year with the exceptions ot Miss !'lrn and M1m Ramsby. Professor Rose has taught In Molalla fir more than a year and will be assisted again next year lu the high school department by Miss Riddle, a graduate of the University of Oregon, also Miss Townsend, a graduate of Reed college. Hiring Mrs- Joy for the coming year Is no experiment, for she baa already taught seven out of eight years In this district, so the directors were but ex pressing the sentiment of the people. Resides having a state certificate and all needed credentials, Mrs. Joy took up special studies recently, which go to make her a "standard" teacher as well. Mrs. Joy has always proven herself ready to assist with music, either vocal or Instrumental, as she plays the organ, piano and violin. Miss Lay a graduate of Reed college, has also proven herself efficient and has won the good will of her pupils in the fifth and sixth grades. She has taught here for a number of years. Miss Ulen did not apply, for the com ing year. The little people of the pri mary department expressed their true sentiment when they wished that shJ might advance with them up through the grades that the pangs of parting might be postponed. She will dwell with them In memory for many a year. Nor was It any experiment, when Mrs. George Case was chosen to teach the primary department for the com ing year. Mrs. Case is well known to the directors as well as to most of the patrons, having taught here before her marriage. Her name at that time waa Reva Huell. No teacher has as yet been chosea for the third and fourth grades. Farmers Sign to Raise Beets. About thirty farmers have signed up to try sugar beets for the purpose of testing this section this year. Meet ings In Uio interest of this coming In dustry are numerous and are of all sizes from the meeting of two neigh bors, each urging the other, up to the mass meetings. Those who are ths most enthusiastic are those who have, seen the coming of the sugar beet in dustry In other places. It would be a long story to tell what they say of the prosperity of the farmers In those sec tions, of the work it creates and tho way town lois and other property sud denly changed hands. Dr. Pettit As a Detective. To hear Dr. Pettit tell how he laid down his own profession and took up detective work is as interesting as a novel- He first thought that the lads who stole his home nnd buggy went to Silverton and that some one would be sure to know the animal. As the story goes, when the animal passed through Silverton at an early hour, someone sleepily wondered "Where )s the doctor going at this hour." Dr. Pettit notified the authorities at once, also offered $25 reward but as nothing was heard about the horso, he went to Oregon City and Portland, learniug nothing there. Then he turned south. Tho animal was found at Albany, whence his master ship ped him to Salem and then rodo "Dick" home. The officers south of that place were notified that the ani mal had been traded for a buckskin. The boys were caught at Oakland and taken back to Corvallis by a sheriff of that place. One carried the char acteristic Mexican dagger and the oth er a ravojver. Later Sheriff Wilson was called to take them back to Ore gon City. As ihey confessed the trial was brie and being under age they were sent to the reform school. ter's story, Army men attend fmm Cnnbv, iim M
