I. II.... . . ii . i. i i . . ! The rumor is prevalent in Oswego this week that Mrs. Mary C. Wells, a well known resident, contemplates the erection of a frame hotel building on the corner of It avenue and First streets on the site of the three cot tages which were destroyed by fire In -t August under what were termed suspicious circumstance Mrs. Wells is spending some day in Oswego, wav. lie was nailed nisi in time to save the lives of all on board, from going in the shute to the river. All of the Kellogg holdings weie finally turned over to the Oregon Iron Company, who built a new dam in place of the one washed out. This company transferred to the 0wego Iron Company, which had coming aa to the time for the actual manufacture of cement. It waa an nounced by SuernitrniUiil I. C. New. lumla thia week that the plant la now in readinraa for operation; that the machinery haa all been tried out and found to be In aplendid working order, and that nothing apparently standi between that and the turning out of cement except the arrival of lime rock front the quarnea at Koavburg and Pallaa. It ia understood that thia rock ia bring loaded into cara at the bunkers, but juat when the Southern Pacific will get the firat shipment to Oswego ia matter that only the rail road company can aettle. The cement company expects to begin the actual manufacture of ita product without any hurrah or celebration, although It ia quite possible that later on aort of general celebration may be indulged in. But thia won't be until the plant ha been running some montha and the ground have been cleaned up and the surrounding improved and beautified, as originally planned ukiii. Although the report can not be ver ified it ia strongly rumored that the office of the Oregon Portland Cement company are to be removed to Port land just as soon as the making of ce ment begins. These office have been maintained at the plant during the construction period, but the change is made necessary because of the fact that by being in Portland the selling end of the business will be greatly fa cilitated. The only office to be main- i tained here will be in connection with the actual manufacture of the pro-1 duct. OHvU:;. .m,, . (Sp.M lull . Mi J. W Iwhk ol Hik aihiHil w.iiiiu HA.EI.IA. May II. CARVER GETS TIME EXTENDED. OSWK'JO, May 11. (Special I : The Portland city ro iiiei' hag granted the Portland & Oregon City railway, better known as the "Carver line," an extension of six months, I dating from May 13, the expiration ' of the period in which the line should be constructed and in operation as set forth in the franchise granted. Mr. Carver confidently expects to have the work completed in a period of ninety days, but to avoid unforseen delays in work or supplies deemed it advisable to ask for a six months' extension. The road runs from Baker's Bridge district to Milwaukie at present, pas sengers transferring here to the Port land Railway, Light & Power Go's, line for Portland or Oregon City. Upon its extension and completion to Portland, the Minthorne hill district and Crystal Lake Park will be better served in transportation facilities, which the residents are eagerly look ing forward to.
