Today's livestock market at the Portland Union Stock Yards was some lively affair. Bidding was active and the competition keen. There were two features to the market which called forth applause on the part t the yard officials. One was the Jump of 40 cents in the price of both pulp and hay fed steers and the other 25 cents In hog prices. There was no change in sheep. A load of 32 head of baby beef brought the new market top. All the buyers wanted thera and before the Bale was closed the price had soared to $8.50, a new record for the season and 40 cents over the closing price of Saturday. Hay fed steers went from $7.75 to $8.15 and cows were up to $7.50. At the same time heifers walked up the price ladder a few notches and stopped when the $7.50 mark was reached. Hogs opened steady with last week Efforts were made to force the prke up a quarter, but it was not success ful until nearly noon, when 89 head, weighing an average of 222 pounds. Drought $9.35, and was immediately followed by a sale of 10G head, aver aging 190 pounds, at the same price, the highest of the season and the rec ord since September, 1914. The sheep market was dull, for the reason that there were no offerings. Only eight head came In and they were too few to Tool with. The out look Is good, but sheepmen are refus ing to ship until such time as they shall have taken the clip. Receipts were 627 cattle, 11 calves, 3058 hogb and 8 sheep a total of 55 f.o.b. shipping point; selling $1. sets, 6407c; green, 20c doz. Cows, heifers. steers, FANCY HOGS SCARCE UNION STOCK YARDS, Portland. Ore., March 21. Prices held steady at the Portland Union Stock Yards to day. While strictly fancy hogs were not available, there were a few good ones, which brought $9.25, and others sold at $9.20. The market is m ex cellent shape and Is apt to continue so for a long time. There is nothing in sight to cause uneasiness or to lead to the belief that prices may break shortly. Receipts were 57 cattle, 357 hogs, 301 sheep a total of eight cars.
