One orchardist writes of severe Injuries to a 500-acre orchard of 5-year-old trees, and Bent specimens of the Injured trees to the station spe cllaists. Professor Lewis doclured before leav ing Corvallts that the unusually deep snow of the past month caused rab bits to attack not only young fruit trees, but also trees 5 or 6 years old. UNION STOCK YARDS. Portland. Feb. 21. Something hit the livestock market at the Portland Union Stock Yards this morning. What It was, no boby seems to know, but before noon prices had Jropped on cattle and hogs and advanced a nickel on lumbs. The solo redeeming feature of the market was the strencth shown In the sheep house. Last Monday' lambs brouiiht $9 and toduy $9.05 for a fine bunch sent In by tho Oregon Experiment Sta tion at Union Junction. What got Into buyers and packers this morning is hard to say. What ever It was. they were far from ac. the, and despite the fact some of the stock offered was of strictly fancy quality, they didn't buy. It was not Ihe fault of the shippers, but ot the buyers themselves. All ihe week the cry has been sent up for "better qual ity." This was forthcoming today. but not a move was made to purchase. For a slow, dragging market, absolute ly devoid of Interest and spirit, to day's takes the blue ribbon. It la mere ly a case of tho tables being turned, and Instead of the farmer being to blame, the buyer was the one at fault. The best price paid for pulp-fed steers, wa? $7.50, a drop ot 25 cents from last week. Some of the offerings were as good as seen In the market this season, but they were sacrificed. Such tactics will not make for im proved conditions here uor build the market up to the standard hoped for. Every time a nail is driven Into It, Se- attlo laughs and benefits. For hogs, $S.05 was again paid. This Is a drop of 10 cents from the market close of Saturday, and shows the weak ness. NOTICE TO CREDITORS. In tho matter of the estate of C. W. Evans, deceased.
