As a visitor In this section of the country, having lived here some years ago, I thought that perhaps your readers might like to have an expression of opinion as to what changes have taken place since the time of my sojourning here. I' ar rived In this neighborhood about the middle of October, 1862. At that time there were but few settlers scattered around through the woods. Among them were the Fosters, the Glevers, Burnetts, Youngs. Foresters. Cookes. Pedezrncs, Gllllens, Johnsens (old Bon Jobnsen of Gresham Is still liv ing), the Chiwoods, Noyers, Powells, etc., who were among the early settlers PROFESSIONAL DIREOTOHY JOSEPIIrHEDGEG Lawyer MOMCY TO LOAN j j, (J, ( u -lUlff I'r.ilrnt T'Uf T7cr TMii-.f T)f. 1 ic r ust .National Dank of Oregon City. Tooie. the son of City Super - I ...... , intenuent Tooxe, won ma intra pnw, 15 In cash, in the recent "Buy It ln Oregon C'lt" eay contest HI essay follows: Loyalty to home, community and state. Is the duty of every citizen. In the faithful exercise of tbe duties of citizenship, we are loyal to tbe com munity and state, and in the sincere performance of our family duties, we maintain loyalty to tbe borne. The citizens of our fair city may demon strate ttclr civic pride and loyalty In several different ways. One of the most Important of these ways, la the purchasing of goods, in cluding the necessities of life, from our local merchants. Among the vari ous reasons why we should patronize home merchants, the following are some of the most Important First Patronizing our home merchants. Is a matter of civic pride. No citizen w ho lacks chic uride. Is a food citizen, and tbe excellence of a city depends solely upon the civic pride and municipal ac tivity of its citizens. Considering these facta it Is evident that all loyal citizens of Oregon City should, as a matter of civic pride, patronize local merchants exclusively. Second Through abundant home patronage, the merchants would be compelled to enlarge their establish- j ments. Increase their stock and add to: their force of employes. With the enlarging of their establishments, and the Increase in revenues, the mer chants would have to pay higher taxes, and this Increased tax revenue would lighten the tax burden of the small home and property owner. The in crease in stock would also raise the merchant's taxes and besides helping the small home or property owner through the medium of increased tax revenue it would afford the buying and blocked out their homes In the then dense forest. But what a change has taken place since that time, for where at that time there stood the vast forest that with great difficulty the pio neers manager to "clear" a small tract of land so as to raise enough grain fur the family bread and seed, and a "po tato patch." And they had the gather ings for "log rollings" and while the mon were engaged In cutting and roll ing the niammouth logs together so as to burn them off of the land, the women would- have a "quilting bee" and a big feed of perhaps bear meat or venison or perhaps both, and the "cricult rider" would come around and preach in the school house or a private home once a month. And the families would turn out en mass, fathers, mothers and chil dren, and go "to church," and the chil dren would walk to school two or three miles through the heavy timber and the beac and panther were as plentiful as anyone, even a hunter, could wish and everybody was happy and content ed, with no family Jars or divorce suits, but all was peace and contentment. But what a change, where once stood the heavy forest and the log cabin now the land Is covered with fine houses, orchards and so thickly settled that the neighbors can talk together without the telephone from houses to house, the school house is almost In sight of the home and the farmer is buying his firewood at a dollar and a half a cord in the tree. But by systematic farm ing the land Is made to produce ten times what it then produced and many of the farmers ride around in their autos Instead of walking or going with an ox team. But among the most remarkable rchanges that I have noticed Is in the educational line, for while we had at that time some good teachers In many instances they were what would be called Illiterate now and then the teach ing was confined almost entirely to the men teachers. Now we find that the ladles are filling the place in the school room and with great success. Last Sat- urday night I was privileged to attend a school entertainment at the Btone school house under the management of Misses Chambers and Burkholder and about 8 o'clock p. m. the house was well filled and the baskets and boxes WKINHARO lUILOINft V. The Increase in tba force of employes which the mercnania wouia nave m make would be'p to aolve the problem of the unemployed, because many of these unemployed could secure posi tions with the various merchanta. This additional employment would Increase the merchants' payrolls and visitors upon observing tte increased business of tha merchants would realize tha fact that the town was having commercial prosperity, one of the best advertise ment that a city or town can have. Third With the Increased business due to home patronage, tba merchant would ba able to give better service, better accommodations, better goods and lower prices. The Increased reve nue, would enable to pay tbelr em ployes belter wages. The great quan tities of goods which they would sell : would enable them to lower their prices and still make a good profit.' The mer- chants in catering to home patronage would secure the best class of goods and would be able to sell them at a moderate price, thus benefitting both themselves and their customers. The prices of the various commo,1 ties would be lowered and the high co of living wolud be appreciably reduce With the Increase in business due f home patronage, the merchants wouiv advertise to a greater extent, thus benefitting the newspapers. The vari ous business firms which serve the merchants would also be benefitted, financially, the various transportation lines would bundle a greater volume of shipping, the wholesale dealers would do a better business and the city would become an Important trade center. "Buy It in Oregon City," let your slo gan be. Oregon City all-ways. belng piled up, for it was a "box social" as well as an entertainment and Miss Chambers Introduced the exercises of the evening by announcing that we were to have a song by Miss Lillian Anderson, a daughter of the present county Judge of this county, and she sang It so nicely rendered that she was encored. And the second time, if any thing, she did better than the first. -She has a very soft, clear voice and showed clearely that she has taken great care In cultivating it. The next one announced was a reading, Martin Laudeen, by Miss Mary Vierhus, and it was rendered with such force that she was also recalled. And the second time ehe repeated a comic piece "I Won't Cry Any More," and then she brought down the house. We then had a duet by Misses Burkhalter and Hoi comb and Miss H. accompanied tho duet with the guitar and tney were also encored and It seemed as though they had reserved the best until the last. Then another reading by Miss Vierhus was announced, and she was also recalled and responded with an other fine piece. Then a vocal solo by MIbs Ruth Brown was rendered. Then came a comic song by Miss Rebecca Retrace that was fine and well ren dered. Then negro selections by Carl Dallas, Wll ford Brown and Martin Lau deen that was well rendered. Then came the concluding act. a reading by Miss Lillian Anderson, that capped the climax. It represented a country school of long ago and she surely did her part well, but It would have to seen and heard to be properly appreciated. She represented eight different char acters, the teacher and seven pupils. Taking the performance all through it reflects credit on the teachers and those who took part In the perform ance. At the close of the program A. W. Cooke auctioned off the boxes and there was some lively bidding and ev erybody seemed to enjoy the exercises thus far. Then followed the selling of "home made candy" and the supply wp.b soon exhausted, then the fish pond was opened and when your correspondent . left at 11:30 p. m. tbe young folks were still having their fun, and it will be a long time before he will forget the good time we had at the Stone school house December 4, 1915.
