Phlpps, general secretary of the Sun day school work In the state, expressed the central thought at the anuual con vention of the Clackamas County Sun day School association which ended Saturday at Molulla. Every address on the program was handled to bring out that truth in one way or another. Rev. Mr. Curtis, in hi. talk on "Character Building, and Rev. J. R. Landsborough, In discussing Personal Work" dwelled on this thought. Rev. Mr. Phlpps' central thought In hi. talk, "The Heritage of Youth," wus that all are responsible for the heritage of the youth who shall follow. Among the most important business taken up Saturday was the election of the following officers: President, Charles F. Romlg. of Oregon City; vice-president, Mrs. S. P. Davis, of Oregon City; secretary-treasurer, Mrs. W. A. White, Oregon City; assistant secretary, Miss Ama Moore; superin tendent of educational department, Mrs. H. N. Smith, Jennings Lodge; su perintendent home and adult depart ment, Mrs. E. 1). Andrews, Oregon City; superintendent elementary work. Mrs. Carl Smith, Jennings Lodge; su perintendent evangelistic work, Rev. A. J. Ware, Oregon City; superintend ent of department for boys of 'teen age, Robert Miller, Oregon City; and superintendent of department for girls of 'teen age department, Mrs. A. D. Mc Donald. One of the features of the conven tion was the demonstration work. Miss Clark, state elementary worker, gave simple und direct rule, for illustrating the lessons for the small children. Mrs. E. H. Andrews, of the county seat, dis cussed temperance work, and asked the delegates to appeal to the children to lead a clean and upright life. Rev. George N. Edwards demonstrated the use of the Bible in Sunday school and Mrs. L. M. Oinistead showed, by lead ing the convention In several songs. how music should be sung. The addresses Friday night by Rev. Charles Hays, of Portland, and Rev. J. K. Hawkins, of Oregon City, were well received. Rev. M. P. Parounagian, field worker for the Methodist church. who Is stationed at Salem; Mrs. Mary N. Badger, of Beaver Creek, and G. J. Taylor, of the Molalla Pioneer, were among the others who spoke Saturday. LETTER ADDRESSED 10 GERTRUDE SMITH, 14, IS LEFT IN POCKET Member, of N. H. Smith Family Un able to Understand Why Young Man Took Life Last Seen ' Here Two Week. Ago. 66,472.26 Two Children Had croup. The two children of J. W. Nix, mer chant, Cleveland, Ga., had croup last winter. One was a boy of 6, the oth er a girl of 8 years. Mr. Nix writes: "Both got so choked up they could hardly breathe and couldn't talk. I gave them Foley's Honey and Tar and nothing else and It entirely cured them." (Adr.j Roy Hill, a farmhand who has work ed In the Redland district the greater part of the time for the last year, and who figured in an attempted elope ment with Miss Gertrude Smith, aged 14 years, early in the year, entered a United Railways coach In Portland and in the vestibule committed suicide by shooting himself through the forehead with a revolver eight or two days ago. The body was found Saturday by a car repairer, who notified the Multno mah county coroner's office. A letter addressed to Gertrude Smith, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. H. Smith of Redlaud, was found on the body. It had the original date of October 8, but that date was crossed out and November 2 substituted. The note follows: "Dear Gertrude: I received your let ter and was glad to hear that you are all right. Truly may the Lord bless you. I have done wrong and can't get right again. Remember what I told you. I loved and could made good for you, but it is too late, and do your best, for you are a goed little girl. Good bye with luck. I die. "YOUR ONLY ROY HILL." The letter was read over the tele phone to the Smith family Saturday afternoon, and they were unable to understand why Hill left such a note. He left the Smith farm for the last time two week, ago and member, of the family report that he was in good spirits and on good terms with the girl. He came to Clackamas county from Tlgard, where his parents live, over a year ago and ha. lived in this county almost all the time since then. and took his daughter home. Hill wa. taken to the city Jail, where Chief of Police Shaw warned him that the girl wa. not of age and that It would be best for him to keep out of the Redland district That night he went to the home of William Stone, an attorney, and asked hi. advice. Early In the spring Mr. Smith con sented to employ Hill again and during the greater part of the spring and the summer he was at work a. a farmhand for farmer, in the Redland district. ! SCHOOLS HElTI STATE REQUNITS Standardization rallies will be held almost every week during the winter, said County Superintendent of Schools Colavan Monday, for districts In ev ery part of the county are working to meet the requirements set by the state board of public Instruction. Thirty-three schools In Clackamas county are now up to the state requirements. A standardization rally will be held Thursday at Canby and Friday at Bol ton. PROPERTY DISPUTE IN COURT William and Mary Fuller filed a suit In the circuit court Wednesday against Charles M. Eggert, alleging that the defendant illegally withholds proper ty belonging to the plaintiffs. They ask for $250 damages.
