RESULTS GROW- (Ily- Pyron Hunter.) rtnpo lias been grown in the Will amette Valley with excellent results for twenty years. It Is a succulent nutritious forage plant, admirably adapted to the moist, mild climate of tho Pacific coast. It stands consider ablo freezing, and Is f cldom winter killed west of the Cascade mountains. It does best on deep, warm, well-ma nured loamy soils. It succeeds well also on peaty soils, but is not adapted to very light sandy or heavy clay soils. It Is a heavy feeder, and must not be expected t6 succeed on poor, worn-out lnnd. Rape Is an excellent crop for pasture or soiling, I. e., for cutting and feeding green for hogs, sheep and goats. Fed to dairy cows It causes a large flow of milk, but to avoid tainting the milk It should be fed . immediately after milking, at the rate of 30 to 50 pounds per day, In two feeds. On account of danger of bloating, sheep, goats, nnd cattle should never be turned on rape for the first time when they are hun gry, or when the rape is wet with dew or rain. They should have plenty of something else to ent first, and plenty ot salt nt all times. It is a good plan to give them access to hay or a grass pasture to prevent overloading on rape, When sheep have become accustomed to it they may be left on it continually with but little danger. Rape Is grown and utilized west of the Cascade mountains In several dif ferent ways. First. When grown for early Bum mer use, the largest yields and the best results are secured by making a succession of planting at Intervals of two or three weeks. Western Stock Journal. L N ALL VALLEY TOWNS Potato market is showing a dragging tendency throughout the valley at this time, with practically no buying now renorted at country points. Growers are offering more freely, and lower prices have been generally nameil at Willamette valley points. In Portland ns high as ll.2o a cental is still obtained in a limited way for selected stock, with ordinary down as low as $1, but the outward movement has been disappointing during recent days. In a measure this Is due to the fact that most of the trade Btocked up quite hpavtlv durins the last few weeks, when there were Indications that local offerings would be scarce and unable to filt the requirements of the trade. Until these stocks are worked off there Is not likely to be much of a movement 1 In the Jobbing trade here. PROFESSIONAL DlFtEOTORY Harviy t. Opsn from A M PORTLAND EGG TRADE IS il YET SETTLED rOHTIAXD, Or., Oct. I. Tin egg market is rather unsettled In tho val ley trade. With aomn of the local In terests freely off'-rllir 'o sell selected candled stock at 2lc iozi-a. although Hie gein rul market along the street stands at 3, togetb-.-r with the fact that some of the other Interests are offering as high as 3oc doicn f. o. b. country shipping poluta, there Is seemingly du apr-ud between the ideas of the trade. A disinterested view of the situation Is that cold storage operators and those handling eastern fresh vr gs are forcing the price of local eggs to a higher price than the trade can afford to nuy. so as to stop the demand in that quality and force the bulk of the biixli1e.1i. In tho cold storage and east ern stock. The nuery has been made how can the sellers of storage and fresh east ern egg continue to offer higher prices for the Oregon fresh product than they are ablo to receive for the same. The answer Is plain. Thera are rather limited arrivals of fresh local eggs In the market at this time, and even though receivers were to actually lose 2c a dozen on every sale they made thereof, they would still be making money by the sale of the eastern and cold storage stocks because of the greater profits obtained In the latter by reason of the boosting of local values. r FOR CHANCE TO SELL With, growers enviously 'awaiting a chance, to sell their product tle Ex treme prlco for' hops, has dropped to lie a pound and is .really "weak at that figure. : Prime stock is being freely offered with mors sellers than buyers. The' market Is In a very bad way. One confirmed sale of 500 bales of Pa cific coast hops was made in New York recently by a valley Interest at 12c a pound for delivery there In De cember. This means a coast price of 10V a pound for choice goods without considering any profit to the seller. Siiles of hops In one day recently are said to reach from 2300 to 3000 bales but several times tnls nmount has been offered to dealers at the prices mentioned. S?o fr.r as can be asrer'ainctl ali ot the business Is domestic, there being no Inquiry at all from abroad at this time.
