Sept 4 Princess Augustine Victoria, daughter of Prince William of Hohenioilern. and Manuel, the deposed king of Portugal, were married with the rites of the Catholic church today in the ancient oval castle which has been the home of the bride since her birth. The religious ceremony that Joined the couple in wedlock was performed by Cardinal Hetto, the late archbish op patriarch of Lisbon. The bride was given away by her father. Four prin cesses, representing as many of the royal families of Germany, attended ber as bridesmaids. The marriage service was perform ed in the chapel of the castle. The spirit of the affair was solemn and impressive, while the costly gowns and Jewels of the showy uniforms of distinguished personages furnished a regal stage setting. Only the close relatives of the two families and a few of the highest Jlg- nitaries found place in the small cha pel of the castle where the ceremony was performed. The other guests .In cluding several score of princes and princesses belonging to all of the roy al families of Europe, were stationed according to their rank, in the various salons and halls through which the bridal procession passed. Hundreds of visitors came to Rifle today to en joy the festivities of the annual Apple Pie carnival Originally conoelved as a celebration of the abundant apple crops of this section, the carnival has developed this year into a two-day celebration with an attractive pro gram of races, buckling and roping contests, baseball and other sports. In addition there is a fine exhibit of llvecork, fruit, vegetable and farm products. The managers still adhere to the original custom of furnishing apple pie free to every visitor. Wll liam Travers Jerome . was acquitted tonight of the charge of having gambl ed on Thursday last on the station property of the Grand Trunk Railway here while waiting for the Immigra tion authorities to pass on the case of Harry K. Thaw. In discharging him the court apologized for the humilia tion to which he had been subjected. The hearing before Magistrate Hen ry Mulvena, of Sberbrooke, lasted less than an hour. It bewn at 7:3a o'clock and at 8:20 the court said: "Sir, you are honorably discharged." An attempt to hold an afternoon ses sion failed because the magistrate felt he had no authority to take pre cedence over James McKee, the Jus tice of the peace who signed the war rant for Mr. Jerome's arrest Tonight however, the magistrate said he was convinced of his authority to act and the hearing moved with dispatch. WHITE WIFE HELD AS MURDER SUSPECT CHICAGO, Sept. 10. Mrs. Charles Sing, white wife of a Chinaman, who was found mysteriously murdered hers recently, was formally booked today. The woman repeated her former state ment as to the killing, saying that two men entered the bedroom where she slept with Sing at daylight and one of them stnick her unconscious. When she recovered consciousness, she de clares, her Chinese husband lay dy ing beside ber. A man named Norn, who is known to have been friendly with Mrs. Sing, and who -is sought by the police, Is said by Immigration Officer Ebey to have been going under an alias. He had been under Investigation by the federal authorities for several weeks befora Sing's murder occurred. It was dlsoveed today that Sing's life was insured for $15,000 and that bis wife was named as the beneficiary HILL INTERESTED IN PORTLAND, Ore., Sept 8. Pro foundly impressed by the importance to all commerce of the movement to deepen the channel over the Columbia river bar, James J. Hill bas written to the chairman of the ports of Col umbia committee, Dr. Alfred Kinney, saying within a few weeks he will make a special trip to the mouth of the Columbia. Thus be will be enabled to deter mine whatt he can do to cooperate with the campaign and add strength to the organization which is alredayj the largest west of the Mississippi river, drawing membership from the entire district drained by the Colum bia, and including five states. The mouth of the Columbia is now the ocean terminus of the Hill lines. The Hill Interests expect to operate ships out of the port of the Columbia along the coats, and have also been preparing for the commerce of the Panama canal, which will be trans shipped from ocean vessels to the wes tern inland.
