He la a man who In vestigates and obserces before otftr Ing an opinion, and who weighs judi cially arguments pro and con that , may be presented to him. In some cases. even, ha finds It the part of wisdom not to express publicly any opinion at all, bearing In mind the proverb that says: "fools rush in where angels fear to tread." Oregon City number among Jer citizens and visitor some wise men and eome not in this category. Re cently a crew of agitators from Port land came here and attempted to lnr down the law to thla community. They did not meet with startling success. Their presumption got them nothing, save some time in Jail, and the eon tempt of a large number of the citi zens. However, it is not only aglu- tora wh3 make presumption of this nature their stock in trade. There are those who are nominally cltlxen whe have tho same fault, even though they display It In different vein. There la a man In this city who has been here but a short time, yet who seta himself up as the oracle of all wisdom and the augur of the fu ture. His mission is to t.ar down and to find fault, to Impurn the mo tives of men who have been promin ent in local affairs for almost as many years as the stranger has lived. Ho is unfair In his statements, biased In his reasoning, obcaecate to his owj pettishness and anile in his continual perversity. Pretending to be honestly criticising city and county affairs, he is in fact either being sadly led as tray by disgruntled friends, or else Is capitalizing his own iconoclasm. In other words, Clackamas coun:y told the truth about herse.f. and a a result she has profited largely and In many ways.- Clackaruas county may not be very expert at blowing her own horn. She may lack a complicated press bureau that sends out to all the rest of the country startling boost literature which la more remarkable than it Is truthful. She may not break Into prtut every time a box of apples aw sent away; and she may not ship W rosea to fancy balls In New York Just for the sake of the advertisement Hut nevertheless she does things and se Is getting settlers, and Is receiving her share of the sort of publicity that counts. This county Is truly exceptlon.lv well favored In many waya. It em braces a variety of land and a variety of climate. Two week ago the Inst hope wa lost when the supreme court decided that the con fessed murderer must b surrendered to the Italian authorities. It 1 expected that within another month young Charlton will be on ill way back to Italy In the custody of the Itallun police, Kven had h not confessed his crime. It Is believed that the young man would have little chance of escaping conviction, as under the Italian system a prisoner I supposed to be guilty until proved lu nocent There la no death penality in Italy, and If Charlton I convicted he will probably get a sentence of twen ty year In prison, ten of them In sol Itary confinement. The dlf erence In these estimates Is a matter of some $192,415; and the 16-mllI tax on this difference will amount to $3 07S.64. Subtracting from this the cost of the cruise for this portion of the timberland $390.80 the county Is the net gainer by $2,487.84. This Is some gain, especially as it Is only upon about a third of the total Weyerhausar holdings.
