Tho fruit I In the bostofshape. the price being brought down by heavy supply and fear that rains, whlrh are threatening, will spoil the fruit now ripe. 11 rowers art selling generally at fl a crate of 24 boxes, which does not leave a heavy profit for those handling Cut berries. Sonw hlghgrado berries are bringing 1.25, but It la not believed that this price will maintain for long. Kggs are again off In price, miming from 17 to 1SS cent a donen In wholesale markets. Poultry men who sell direct to consumer are getting 20 ci'nts. which Is also the prevailing price in stores. Asparagus continue In good do .mnnd. mid ia bringing from 65 cents to a dollar per dozeu bunches. String beans are ranging from 10 to 12 cents a pound. Much of the supply Is sunburnt. l.ettuiv is plentiful but not over good in quality. Other market good are about the same as last week, cloudy weather having had an Influence to steady prices that were threatening to break. NOTORIOUS CASE AGAIN IN MISSOURI'S COURTS ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 9. After hav ing been postponed through nine terms of court because of the alleged Illness of the defendant, the case of Mrs. Dora Doxey-W'hitney was taken up in the St. Louis county court at Clayton for trial. Mrs. Whitney has been a defendant in the courts of this vlciinlty for four years, first on a ' charge of murder, and then on a charge of bigamy. She first was la dieted after William J. Erder, a St. LouiB postal clrk she married at Clayton, died, leaving her an Insur ance policy on bis life. A trial in this city on the murder charge result ed In an acquittal. Mrs. Doxsy, us she then was, and her husband, Dr. Loren B. Doxey, then went to Tenn essee. Dr. Doxey' body later was found In the Tennessee river at Clif ton, Tenn. It wa reported a case of suicide. In the meantime Mr. Doxey had been indicted for bigamy, on the ground that she had married Krl-jr while still the wife of Dr. Doxe. Soon after the death of Dr. Doxey the widow went to Greer, Idaho, where she married a man named Whitney. Whitney is ber sixth husband. Well Used to It Doctor-What you need ia a change of scene. Housewives hae started buying fruit to can, everybody l.i demanding berries threa times a day an1 between times, and pickers are in the height of activity through out the Wllainette valley and In tue eastern and southern part of t'je state. In about a week more Lie ea son will have started to wane, and then the. big canneries will take a large share of the fruit, only better grades being left for general sale. long with the coming of the can ning season a rite in the price of su.5 ar U propaecled. CATTLE QUOTATIONS Receipts for the week have beej: Cattle 1575, calves 49, hogs 51VJ, sheep 5S27. The cattle market is very slow. A combination of circumstances has beared prices and there is not as strong demand for beef as the pre vious week. Extreme high water has caused many cattle in the vicinity of Portland to be liquidated before the usual time. Heavy shipments from California and Utah have filled the yards. Best steers are selling at $7.25 to $7.50 ; cows S6.25 to K.iO; bulls $5.50 and calves $S.O0 to J9.00. The hog trade held strong until ri- day. Receipts have been very liberal and the market is from 5c to 10c low er. Best light swine steady at JS.40 An uneven sheep market ruled for the six-day period ending Saturday There is a fair demand for fat mut ton, which is very scarce. The bulk of receipts contained nothing but poor sheep and lambs, which are slow to move. Yearlings are quoted Ht J5.50 to $5.75; two year-olds $5.50 Ewes $4.50 to $4.75 and best spring lambs are steady at $6.50 to $6.75. HOVER ABOUT $1.25 StniwlH-rrle seem to have foun.1 their own for awhile, and are settling down to sales in the neighborhood of $1.25 a crate. Price are varying from this, and "straw" are selling a retail from three to four boxes for a a qunrter. Washington berriea are still leading In quality, but late ar rivals of Oregon berries are showing such great Itnprovenntnt that there will soon be but little choice between the two. Eggs still continue to be quoted in Portland markets at from 1S' to 20 cents a doaen. Itetail prices are rang ing from 20 cents up, and poultrymm are selling at about the same figure direct to consumers. Cherries are ruling from 10 to 12'i cents a iound. The fruit Is much bet ter than that seen earlier In the week and has more flavor. New potatoes are falling back In price somewhat, arrivals from thv south glutting t.ie local market. Green vegetables are remaining about the same, though pens and let tuce are inclined to be higher, owing to the continued hot weather. Other vegetables are steady and plentiful. SHOWS NO CHANGE Strawberries are still holding firm at one dollar per crate, and are of good quality. Clark seedlings, Dol lars, and other varieties are ruling at this price, and there is little fruit to be had for less, though some poor er stock is being unloaded at 85 cents. Extra fancy Washington ter ries are bringing $1.25 a crate, but not much of this sort of stuff is be ing offered. The market in general is showing practically no change from earlier li the week. Asparagus is ranging around the dollar mark per dozen bunches; eggs are still between 18 and 19 cnts on the markets, and are selling from 20 cents up at retail, de pending on quality and the fatness of purchasers' pocketbooks. Cherries are dropping off in qual ity, but are the same price. Goose berries are plentiful, but have to : e picked ever carefully. Green vegetables are aB formcrlv. Green peas and string beans are in somewhat better condition, cooler weather having prevented further sunburn. BERRIES A DOLLAR; SUGAR WILL RISE Uerry offerings are Improving in quality, though prices are about the same. Farmers are selling their fruit from a dollar a crate up, d pending upon grade. Sunburnt fruit is being replnced by better berries, as those that have ripened Inter are being brought out, and buyer are finding offerings much more attrac tive. Picking is general throughout the state and In Washington. North ern berries seem to be the best so far, probably due to the fact that the early heat was not as exreme. Eggs are still hovering between 18 and 20 cents on the wholesale markets, and poultrymen are selling direct for from 20 to 22 cent. The market is weak, and further varia tions in price are expected. Hutter la Increasing slightly in price, but not sufficient to cause much comment. Outside demands for cream is said to be the cause for the rise. New potatoes are gaining strength on the market, and are being general ly bought, the demand helping to raise prices. Old spuds are being generaHy discarded, and ranchers and growers are not even hauling them to market. This is bringing the new stock to the front. Continuation of warm weather Is apt to bring about an Increase In prices of all green vegetables, though rain within the next week will hoid the market at present levls. Indica tions of "burning" are to be noted on peas and lettuce, especially. further relief aa to the court may -in nv-et and eouitable herein. Attorney for 1'ialntiff. DROP OFF SHARPLY Strawberries are selling at whole sale from $1 a crate to $2.25 per era e pay yoirr money and take your choice. Naturally good berries are not to be had for a dollar, offerings at this price being mostly Californias or frost-bitten fruit. Good berries, however, are much cheaper than formerly, and will be cheaper yet be fore the end of the week. Portland commission men aw still trying lo convince the growers that there la no market, but local ranchers, who have good fruit, are having no difficulty in getting fair prices. Cherrlvs are making their appear ance in local and Portland markets, and are ranging around $1.73 per 10 pound box. The fruit Is yet a bit tart, but is In good shape. Local cher rre are to be bad In small quantities, but hava not fully ripened. High water is keeping salmon scarce and at top prices. Green vegetables are declining slightly In price, and are finding a ready market. New potatoes are selling well, ranging from 4 cent a pound up at wholesale. Asparagus is s.lM holding at between 60 cents and a dollar per dozen bunches. Let tuce is more plentiful. REAL ESTATE Oregon Iron & Steel Co. to O. W. Gibson, lot 5, Lonita Meadows; $10. W. F.
