R. I., Mhy 19. The dvnamite cruiser Vesuvius, one of the first vessels of the old "new navy that was the forerunner of the ""white squadron,' was rammed by one of her own torpedoes today while out at practice, and was only saved from sinking by the heroic action of her crew, who massed In the bow of the vessel to throw ber stern high while she rushed Inshore towards Hope Island, upon which she was beached The dynamite cruiser, long since dlscardod as a practical war vessel, and stationed at the Newport torpedo station for many years, save when sent out to blast derelicts, had jus, discharged a Whitehead torpeado a moment before the accident happen ed. The projectile, through soma fault, turned in the water and raced back at the craft like a boomerrang, striking the vessel below the water line and trearing a 22-Inch hole In her hull. Wireless calls for assistance were at once set forth, but the Vesuvius managed to reach Hope Island under her own steam. Probably if the crew had net massed themselves forward so as to lift the vessel's hull partly clear of the watsr. the freak vessel would have gone down in deep wa ter.. T. L. Smith 150 J. V. With a large and representative attendance, the South Dakota Retail Merchants and Hardware Dealers' association began Its sixteenth annual conven tion here- today. Costs, credits. In surance, freight rates and otier sub jects of common Interest are to be discussed during the three days' sessions. FEAR "PINK BOLL WORM" WASHINGTON, D. C May 20. A quarantine against cotton-seed Im portations from Egypt and India may be established as a result of a con ference held at the department of agriculture today on the subject of the threatened Invasion of the "pink boll worm." This dangerous enemy of cotton is now widely distributed in Egypt and India and it Is feared that the pest might be introduced in to the United States. C May 20 The annual convention of the Prop rietary Association of America, com posed of the leading manufacturers of proprietary articles In the United States and Canada, began in this city today and will continue until Friday, Nearly three hundred members are In attendance. The officers in charge of the convention are President F. J. Cheney, of Toledo, Ohio, and secretary-treasurer Orient C. Pinckney. of New York. Gathering of Iowa Club Women CEDAR RAPIDS, la.. May 29. Ced ar Rapids is entertaining a thousand or more women visitors who have gathered here from all over the state to attend the tenth biennial conven tion of the Iowa Federation of Wom en's clubs. Mrs. Percy V. Pennybeck er, of Texas, president of the Gen eral Federation, is here as the guest of the convention. The proceedings will continue through the greater part of tne week. Sale of Ball! C, May 20, Members of the Gate City Guard of Atlanta were received at the White House this afternoon by the Presi dent and Mrs. Wilson. The oil guard Is going over the same route it went thirty-four years ago, when it came Into the North to aid In bringing about a better feollng between the North and the South.
