In the early part of the session of the legislature the Clackamas delega tion received a petition signed by 825 of the heaviest taxpayers of Clarka- hour. Exalted Ruler O'Malley win attend the Grand Lodge of Elks at Rochester, N. Y., as the representa tive of his lodge. Mr. Scunoerr then introduced the bill. The educational board of ClackamaJ County agreed with the delegation that If tMs Increase was made they would dispense with the services of one of the school supervisors. There nre three supervisors now and the three cost the county $3,800 per an num, or about $1,205 each per annum. Conservatively put, one less supervis or will save tbe county $1,250. Mr. Gary's salary Increase is $t00. He is required to spend $4 each week visiting rural schools from Septem ber 1st to June 7st, and Is allowed $100 extra travelling expenses. Tho bill Mlow s him a $B0 a month deputy Instead of a $10 a month deputy, so that the increased cost of his office totals $940 per annum. $1,250, tho saving on supervisor, less $940 shows that there is a net saving undor the Gary bill of $310 per annum to the taxpayers. There has been so much criticism offered promiscuously against anv salary bill that I think that the people of Clackamas County are entitled to know that under this arrangement they will have $310 less to pay for their educational department than un der the old systems. Every member of the Clackamas delegation ln both house and senate voted to repeal the school supervisor law. I am not . Including Malarkey and Lofgren ln the delegation In this matter. F. M. GILL.
