Bnt thin is not till Mr. Wanamiikei laid. He went further and n tiered n warning to which the Rrpablicuu party ahould give heed, raying : The foe America haa to fear are not the savage Turks or tlio Insurrectionists of Cuba or the territory grasping British, bat they aro our own patient and heart tired people, our own suffering, much promised people, who, betrayed and disheartened, no longer have faith in their party and will turn to any leadership that offer pronilno of better timoa, bellevinii that worse timet can never come than thoee now existing. It la a terrible thing to observe publlo aontiment adrift and uncap talned and tlie people sweeping away from their affection to the old party. The young men a.e growing up Indifferent to republican principles, with no respect for parties of bro ken platforms who use national and state pat ronage in payment of election contracts. The political religion of the nation Is falling lower and lower under Insults to Intelligence, viola tion of law, reckless daring of unscrupulous borsea. Tbat which gives Mr. Wanamaker cause for despair is precisely that which gives hope to those who know and nn- del-stand the shameful record of the Re publican party since iti great leader died. The ways of Providence aro' mys terious, bnt if it is necessary, in order to open the eyes of the people to tho truth aud Justine or Uctnocrutio principles, that they shonld be compelled to cd dure want und suffering and the rigor of hard time then it may well be suid that what tbey have suffered and whut they will be compelled to suffer is si in ply a blessing in disgnise. Anything tlmt will compel them to know the truth aud to value it nuy thing that will drive thorn to turn their minds- to the contemplation of the prin ciples tliut tiro essential to life, liberty aud the pursuit of happiufta in this re public is to be welcomed. ' They aro now suffering the bitter re eults of their own folly. They hove fol lowed after iulso gods; they hare al lowed themselves to be deceived; they have misused thnir power; they havo bowed at the shriuo of Muuiniou. And now they are reajiing the fruits of their blindness. Well will it be for them in tho duys that aro yet to come if experi ence teaches them tho truth and brings them to tho indorsement of those prin ciples of equality, justice aud honesty that are tho bai-is of democracy. Meanwhile the great object lesson by which tbey any be able to discover their folly is giving duily and hourly exhibitions in Washington, at the White Houso aud iu the hulls of congress. Eighteen month from now there ought uot to bo found an honest man iu the country willing to support the Repub lican party. Atlanta (Joustitutiou, MAKE CHAPMAN ANSWER. The Welfare of tlie Nation Demands the Eanoaure of llasoally ttnnators. It is tint enmigll to punish Chapman. It Is certainly not euough to inflict u purely technical punishment upon him, which only advertises him as a perfwt ly safe broker for rascally senators und corrupt public -otllciais to deal with when they wunt to soli out their votes or their official authority for money. Chapman knows vtiat senators specu latively sold their votes to the Sugar trust. Ho should bo made to tell. The situutiou is intolerable to the couutry. It should be equally intoler able to the senate mid to every upright member of that body. Aa boo ii us this nominal imprison ment is over the senate should send for Chapman UKiiin, mid again insist upon ut)8wers to its questions, uud uguin and again punish him if he refuses. Tho aeuuto is continuous. So is Chap man's contempt of it. So should be its iusistt'uce upon his purgation of that contempt by full submission aud frank answers to its quttions. Tlie impor tant tiling is to iniiko him answer tluwu questions. New York World. An Easy One. Mark lluuna bus no position on tlio tariff or other important questions, ex cept to affirm that he is a candidate fur re-election to the senate. He desires tlio people to guess what be might do under certain circumstances when their iuter rts would be involved. Cedar Rapids Unae't. People Dlsoover tlie Mockery of Repub lican fledges No Hlg-n of Returning Prosperity What the Last Campaign Settled A Oolilbug Controversy, Tho Wite'hiiigton Post and the New York Evening Post, two esteemed con temporaries edited by two of the most virile mugwumps and independents known to the business, are now engaged iu a luborious controversy over a ques tion as to whut was settled by tho re cent election. The Washington Post, having remarked that tho coinage issue was settled by the voters, its New York contemporary loudly inquires that if this is, indeed, the case, "whut, in the name of all gods at once, uro the popo cruts tulking ubout aud threatening to do ut tho next election?" All must admit that this exclamation is cburged with great scholarship anil clusNicul warmth. When uu editor, even in New York, feels ut liberty to cull on ull the gods at once, we feci in our bones that lie bus had lodgings on Mount Olympus in tlie boarding hntwe where the gods dwelt aud hud their washing done. It seems to us thut (he Washington Post fails to give the proper weight to this suggestion. Indeed, it muxes no reference to the matter what ever, but proceeds in the most matter of fact way to remind its metropolitan contemporary that in a government of tlie peoplu a, popular issue is never ab solutely settled beyond the possibility of a change; that in the last election the question of independent free coinage was disposed of for four years, but not .ittled. It seems to us that even an editor who had associated with the gods on terms of equality would be able to un derstand bow it is that the free coinage issue baa not been settled. The Democrats offered it to the peo ple wholly and solely on the ground that it would restore prosperity. ' The Republicans, on the other band, while tbey admitted tbat tbegold standard was bad enough to can lor a remedy, declared in favor of international. bimet allism, and likewise pledged themselves to restore prosperity by means of high er tariff taxation. Thoughtful men know that, although the free coinage question and the tariff question figured as the issues between the parties, the real issue is prosperity, the restoration of business, trade and industry to their old level The issues between the parties are merely means to an end. The restoration of prosper! ty is the real issue. If the Republicans can bring about international bimetallism and thus re store prosperity, there is an end to the independent free coinage contention. Or if they cun restore prosperity by means of higher tariff taxes the free coinage, free trade and tariff arguments all full to the ground. The people aro willing to pay higher taxes as tlie price of prosperity. But when tbey puy the price tbey want the goods delivered. They will demand prosperity as the re sult of Repnblicun tariff legislation. The Washington Post warns its New York namesuke that the gold stuudurd orguus are themselves making weighty contributions of aid and comfort to the free coiuuge cause; first, by suceriug ut the conference commission appointed by Mr. McKinley to promote interna tional bimetallism, and, second, by ad vocating the retirement of the green backs. But these things are mere matters of moonshine and have small weight with the great body of the people. The main, the overpowering argument against the Republicans and the policy which they are pursuing is the fuct that prices aro lower and times harder than they were when the poople selected the Republic an party as their instrument to rostore prosperity. This foot, which is felt from one end of tlie republic to the other, aud which bears heavily on every man, woman and child who is eiiguKctf in earning a living, is more important than all other issues put together, Iu fuct, it is the only issue before the people at this moment the only qesiioii worth considering. Will the the Repub lican party bo able to restore prosperity by mcuus of higher tariff taxation? If It is able to do so, well aud good. That Will be an end of the matter, uud vari ous questions that are now important will never be heard of uguin. But if they do not restore prosperity what is tho alternative? Why, the very necessi ties aud calamities that will come to the people duriug Mr. McKiulcy's ad ministration will compel tin m to turn to the Democratic purty for relief, aud they will need no compelling. They will swarm to the polls in behalf of Deuiocrutio doctrines when they discov er tho mockery of tho Republican pledges. When thut is demonstrated, neither of tho two Posts will have any difficulty iu discovering what is "settled." Tbey Will find that the Republicitu purty it self is "settled. "Atlanta Constitution.
