James Athey, aged "81 years, and a pioneer of 1843, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sarah Campbell, on Monday noon of apoplexy. James Athey and his young, wife came across the plains from Missouri with the .famous company of 1843, that was pilot d by Dr. Whiteman the company that iirought the first wagon train over the nuountains, and demonstrated the practi cability of reaching the far land of Ore gon overland. They located in Oregon ftty,attd lived the remainder of their Jives here. Mrs. Athey died tho 11th of Bast February, at the age of of 70 years, And now follows her partner of 58 years. Their surviving children are Morrison and John of Idaho, Charles, Mrs. Sauth Campbell and Mrs. John Baxter of this city and Mrs. Homer Holland of Salem. The 'funeral services were held on Wednesday. Gov. W. P. Lord Tuesday remitted a fine of $230 Imposed on P. A. Marquam of Marquam for sell ing liquor without a license. The fine - was remitted upon the recommendation of Judge T. A. McBride, of the trial court, who stated that he regretted that the law left him no option but to impose the sentence. The man lias an affidavit, which is on file in the governor's office, that he will not Kill liquor again, nor j permit any oaa in his employ to do so, or to have it sold, on his premises. of it. The citizens of Milwaukiu held a meeting Tuesday evening and unanimously de cided to give the plan to build a path trom Portland to Oregon Oity every as sistance. The Woodmen's Dramatic SocUty offered to give the military drama, "Hap Hazard" recently suc cessful presented for the benefit of a bicycle path fund, and the Fox orchestra I of Portland volunteered to furiUHh the music for the occasion.
