A frightful street-car accident occured in Portland on Tuesday morning, on East Morrison street, between Eighth and Ninth, involving the death of four persons and the injury, more or less severely, of 18 more people. Oar 52, of the Oity & Suburban line, running between Mount Tabor and the West Side, in charge of Conductor Stephen Guthrie, with John O. Kieffer as inotorman, jumped the track while crossing a bridge at high speed, and dashing over the roadway through the frail wooden guards, built for tha protection of pedestriuns, and plunged into a slough of water 20 feet lelow. ' April 20th was the 78th anniversary of Odd Fellowship and was fitting ob served in many places. The Baptist Sunday school has a membership, of over 300. It is one of the largest in the state. Charles Charles and wife of Sacra mento, Calif., arrived Sunday and arc visiting friends here. A large force of men are at work put ting the 6-innh mains on Seventh street in place of the 6-inch ones. Senator Patterson, Squire Farrar and Wm. Brown of Salem spent Tuesday fishing for salmon at the falls. Fred Gadke will soon open a plumb ing and tin shop in Wilson & Cooke's old stand, next to Bellomy & Busch's. The conference of the Evangelical church closed its sessions at Canby on Monday. The Clackamas county ap pointment are: Oregon City, J. Erich ; Canby, A. Engelbart ; Milwaukie, J. B. Streyffeler. The contract for furnishing crushed rock for upper Seventh street was given to Sidney Smyth instead of the Labor Exchange because said exchange could not deliver same on a day's notice. Smyth bid $1.50 and the Labor Exchange $1.25 per cubic yard. Work on the new church building of the German Evangical Zion Congrega tion began on Tuesday. It is to be situ ated at corner of Eighth and Jefferson streets, in same block with Presbyterian and German Lutheran churches. The 1 building will be 26x58 in size and will be a credit to this religious society of which Rev. F. Sack is pastor. The Young Men's Christian Associa tion will conduct a symposium on Sab bath observance in the Congregational church at 4 o'clock next Sunday after noon.
