The IJenson supporters tried to pro j it Davis from occupying speaker's li.iir but they saw it wouldn't do and glinted Hon. Geo. II. Williams of Portland uve as his opinion that house could not ranize without two-thirds of members iucted. The Benson house adjourned hi Saturday till Monday but the Davis house held short session on Sunday. Veness has introduced a bill in the Unison house providing for a board of ratal commissioners for the locks at 0 egon City. The Oregonian calls the Benson crowd of 31 members the "rump house" while i lie Statesman calls the Davis body of . i members the "rump house." S.u.em, Jan. 27. Mitchell is now m kings last-ditch fight. Last night Uf appeared before the caucus of the use and stated his position on a joint nvention. He wants 40 members. V p imminent breaking up of the Benson ne has greatly frightened him. He ' determined that it shall be held to . ler, at a'l hazards, till next Tuesday. He wis careful to point out to the cau c i hat the federal statutes say that a joint convention shall consist of "mem be j of the legislature." In his opinion 4i members of the house and one mem brofthe senate would constitutes j tint convention. The belief is now quite prevalent in Sal mi that Mitchell is beaten. Today Jo in P. Ward, one of Mitchell's von ll'l'taiial advisers, made a call on Jon tilian Bourne, i he Benson house pretended to carry on business today with 30 members, 'w.i jess than a majority. Misener of Chink withdrew immediately after the mi uning roll-call, just as he said he vniild. and Lake, republican, of Benton i n. Lincoln, retired soon after the open ing of the session. VeneBs of Polk has presented to the in me a bill making it unlawful to urge more than 25 cents per ton for -Hulit or 5 cents for each passenger for rftxage of steamboats and other craft ' 'nigh the locks at Oregon City. HULINO. A taffy party was given by Frank Albright 'at the residence of J. W. Critscr, on Friday night last. A good time was enjoyed by all present. Some of the young people think taffy is very hard to get out of their hair. We hear from good authority that a gentleman representing a tile and pot tery company spent a few days here lately, investigating the chances for starting hero. After caroful Inspection and examination of the clay, he pro nounced itjuf excellent quality, and as the supply is unlimited, we may in the near future have a tile and pottery works in our village. The gentleman intend to return again soon and perhaps make final arrangements for starting up here When questioned as to the capacity the works would be, he answered our com pany will employ at least 200 men. Wo wonder if the Oarus correspondent thinks this looks like merely a newspaper boom. Those who have allowed their business talent to become congested (by what they call hard times) had better awake from their sleep of lethargy or they will soon drift behind. Elder Crabtree preached here last Sun day. He sent his hat around among the attentive audience for a collection, but he got less than nothing, for he even lost his hat, somejwn of Belial having on the sly exchanged his shabby old one for the elder's. The parson couldn't get the slouchy thing on his big head and had to leave bareheaded. Well, we couldn't stand that and chipped in for another hat . Though we, as a community, are young in years, a surprising amount of aristocracy has developed among us. One would think that some of the 'ornery folks here were of all human stocks the most select, when, if the truth was known, many of them are the offspring of chicken and hone thieves or Botany Bay convicts. There is, for instance, Billy Socks, who is so "stuck up" that he will wear nothing but patched over alls and won't wash his shirt more than once a month. A widow has begun a libel Buit against the proprietor of the Wild Oat. In the last issue he referred to the lady as a "Japanese flour-sack" because she wears white dresseB cut in the chrysanthemum style. Her lawyer has placed before the unlucky editor the alternative of either marrying the widow or paying $25,000 damages. v Felix Airtight is bo short of feed for his stock that he talks of going to the valley for a gra widow, as he flunks that would be far preferable to no feed at all.
