The large audience present wese highly enthusiastic in praise of the entertainment, and during the rendition . of the program showed their appreciation of a good thing by pushing it along with wciferous applause. A number of Oregon Oity's lovers of art held a meet ing at Cheney's art studio last Thursday evening and organized a sketching club, the first time for practical work being last Monday evening, when two hours were spent in drawing from a life model. Sketching from life is very essential and as it impossible to become .an artist without tome knowledge of this kind of work, special attention will be paid to this class. Among the different classes will be drawing from life, antique and stiil life, accompanied by lessons in perspective. All persons wishing to join any of these classes are invited to call at Cheney's Art Gallery some time before next Monday evening to arrange for same. The work will commence in earnest on next Monday evening and the club will hold weekly meetings on that evening of each week from 7 o 0 o'clock. The entire work will be under the direction of E. S. Starkweather, and is well and favorably known throughout the county. Articles incorporating the Josephine Mining Co. were filed with the county clerk last week, the authorized capital being foO.OOO, and the incorporators T. W. Sullivan, Franklin T. Griffith and Charles P. Thore. The object is to own and work certain mining properties in Jssephine county, though the principal place of business will be in Oregon City. Last Monday evening Prof, and Mrs. J. W. Gray entertained a number of friends at their residence. The time was spent with various and amusing games, and at 10 o'clock refreshments, consist ing of sandwiches, lototer salad, cheese straws, salted almonds, cuke uud choco late, were served. At a late hour the guests departed, having passed a most pleasurable evening. Ed. Holmes and family returned Mon day from Alaska. Mrs. Geo. C. Browiiell left for San Fruneisco Wednesday. The Hesporians and Willamette Falls literary league have arranged for a joint session of the two clubs, which will take place January 22. A grand and excit ing time is anticipated. Miss Echo Samson sang a beautiful ami greatly appreciated solo. Miss Maud Winslow delighted tho audience with her remarkrble elocution talents. Her declamation was well delivered and was greeted with vociferous cheers.
