It who found neceHwiry to el inline the Main leading to the union pump, which had developed a weakneHH, owing to heavy prendre of 210 ikiiiic1h ur equaru inch reacting on the right angles at which the wimo laid been placed at the time the punip was set up. this pipe, ov rciiHon ol Imhiik on top of the factory Hume, was not thoroughly secure, and owing to tlio several uiigles in lame, was also very unsightly. This pipe was removed uiid run under the Hume at easy angles, and 1ms since given good satiHiacuon. In order to supply the city mains from the reservoir to their fullest capacity, it will lie necessary to take up the four inch main on Seventh street, from .Monroe t' Molalla avenue, about HUM) feet, and replace with six inch pipe, which will double the capacity, and make a uniform main from reservoir to Monroe street, where it connects with the two six inch mains on Fifth and Seventh streets, until they join ut Fifth and Center streets. At the time this main was run, in the summer of 1892, it was then planned to 1 ty an additional four inch main from Monroe street on Sixth to Molalla avenue, whenever it should bo required ; as at that time no definite location for a reservoir li.id been selected and the extra cost of a six inch pipe was deemed too much of an iiitlay at the time. As the exjiense of taking up the four ir.ch pipe and relaying the six inch would not exceed $200.00, it is therefore economy to have but the one main, and the four inch main can be relaid wherever it may be desirable. In order to do this the Hoard will have to expend about 11000.00. and com mence the work early in May next, so that the sume will be ready for sprinkling reason, when there is such a great demand on the water supply. Charman, Secretary. $7542 68 THE NEW RESERVOIK AT ELYVILLE. The Board began to prepare plans and specifications early in February last, and hud progressed so far that the necessary pipe was ordered in April, and bids were advertixed for in the city papers and the Oregonian, which resulted in ob taining eight responsible bids. Messrs. Wetzler k Abrey, of Portland, were the lowest bidders and were awar.led the contract at the following prices: Earth excavation, 14), cents per cubic yard. Loose rock excavation, 48 cents yer cubic yard. Solid rock excavation, 00 cents per cubic yard. concrete lining, six inches thick, $5.50 per cubic yard. Concrete coping, $5.60 per cubic yaid. Asphalt lining, 20 cents per square yard. Smith & Howard received the subcontract lor the excavation, and commenced work in ii e lirHt week in June, and completed their part during the month, at leant 10 daya later than anticipated, owing to the largo amount of rock met with, uul delay canned by several hard rains. The balance of the rock progressed rapi lly, und by July 25th, the Bamo was completed and the water was turned in. The capacity is 1,440,200 gallons. Height above Main street, 415 feet. Pressure at pump to throw over 40 foot stand pijie, is 210 lbs. per suure inch. Water was pumped in for three weeks before it was rilled. This was on account of the excessive use during the day for sprinkling and ulso due to the four Inch Main on Seventh street, from Monroe to Molullu avenue, which causes too iiiiich friction for rapid pumping. The six inch main to replace this will give the desired service and remedy tins defect. August 25th, after n thirty day trial, the reservoir was formally accepted as completed, according to coutuact; and was found to come up to our most sanguine expectations. All the lalairers employed on the work were principally from this neighbor h Kxl, and outside of the material and cartage, the money expended benefited o.ir ciiizcns mainly. All pipes were laid under the mpcrvision of the superintendent, W. II. Howell, and without uoitbt cheaper than same could be contracted for. Tlio Hoard was ably imsMed by city engineer, II. II. Johnson, and also J. F. C.me, city engineer of Portland, who superintended the construction during the progress of the work. The reservoir was mndo nearly 50 per cent larger than was first contemplated, and U none too large for present needs, affording about two days supply, but with economy in an emergency, would last long r. In consequence of the largo amount of rock to contend with, and the extra sue, our original estimate of cost was exceeded from $15u0.00 to $i'000.00; but even then the cost is reasonable. The whole work has been thoroughly and substantially done, and the progress of the work has lieen noted by irequcnt visit of each member of the Board, and we can truly say that work is all tirst-elass, and that Oregon City has the best reservoir in the state. The cost is claHHl'icd as follows: COST or MKSKKVOIK.
