St. John's school had memorial day exercises last Wednesday afternoon, which were at tended by a score of the members of the Ci. A. K. and Relief Corps, by special invitation The children pres ented a programme of essays, recita tions and music suited to the occasion The Rev. Father Hillearand gave a short address of welcome to the Gran.d Army visitors, and responses were made by Mrs. Geo. A. Memorial day ob servance on Saturday was under the direction of Meade post, G. A. R. In the morning the children of the Park Place school and St. John's parochial school gathered at Pope's hall and listened to addresses by the Rev, Father Hillebrand and Principal J. W. Gray The procession formed and marched on Main street, passing up Seventh street and out to the cemetery. There Corwin Shank delivered a fine oration. As the roll of honor was called, the bugle sounded taps after each name. It is only about three weeks since farmers were hauling in the last of their onions, and were getting about $2 50 a sacx for them, and many of them were being shipped to San Francisco. Now new California onions are in the market here and selling at fl.25 per sack, but there is not much demand for them' There is still quite a lot of old Oregon onions on hand, and thev command 12 to l.'.OU a sack. Howell has finished laying the supply, discharge and waste pipes. The vebtry of St. Paul's parish has elected the Rev. Richard Mercer, of Breckinridge, Colo., to be rector of the Episcopal church here. Bishop Morris preached in the church Sunday morn ing and administered ho'y communion. . Mrs. Moore, who has taken the manag ment of Clackamas county for the Viavi Co., will give a talk in Airs. C. D. Recorder Ramsby collected during the month of May fees amounting to $217-45, and Clerk Horton, $110 85. Sheriff Maddock tnrned over daring the month tax collections amounting to $38,984. Last month the sheriff col lected $27,320 of taxes, thus making the whole amount paid to date, $66,304, which is less than half the total sum on the taxroll . The association sang the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" with Miss Mul len as organist. Miss Jennie Rowen, C. Rutherford and E. M Ward were asked to prepare a suitable piograra for next meeting. "'How Much Arithmetic" was intro duced by Supt. Gibxon, followed by A. C Strange, P M Weddell, T. J. Gray, Prof, AMerson of Portland and Miss Annie Wells. Mis Fannie G. Porter read an inter esiing paper on 'Child-study." Paul Kiel recited " William Tell" in flrt rale style "Nature Study" was the subject given Mr. E M Ward He handled the subject well. Mr. Weddell, Mrs. Weils and Mr. Gibson also sptke on this subject . Association at noon adjourned to the tow n hall, where a delicious dinner was waiting to be dixctisai'd. The table was beautiful decorated with pansies. AFTERNOON 8KHHION. Program was opened by singing "Rally Round the Flag." Mrs. Wells read a carefully prepared paper on "Vertical Writing." The sub- ject was discussed by H. S. Gibson, C. W. Onretie, H. S. Strange, T. J. Gary and Geo. L. Story. The audience listened to a ueautiful song by four ladies. "Herbart and Herbartianism" was the subject of an excellent talk by A. C Strange. Miss Eva Scott recited "Picnic Sam" in her usual pleasing style. ' Little Miss Sarah Rogers sang "Peek a Boo" in a sweet clear voice. Theodore, Miller fairly brought down the house by his recitation "Seeing Things at Night." H. S. Strange spoke on "Reforms Needed in our State Teachers' Associa tion." He was listened to with close at tention. The Milwaukie Quartette sang a lovely song. Resolutions thanking the people of Milwaukie in general, and Mr. Gary, and Miss Starkweather in particular for the pleas unt meeting enjoyed by those present, were unanimously adopted. The audience sang "Blest be the Tie that Binds," after which the meeting adjourned. About forty teachers at tended this meeting, and a good number of Milwaukieites was present Bertha M. Gibson.
