Alter Having an extra goou time one night, whose lackey, who was ag f8r gonfs 8g himself, aided him in ... ., ,. . mounting lor Dome, tie called lor tbe MAina Viiif t It u r nnl Vta f .M 1 n ,1 nurl says the lackey: "I can't find the place where the reins ought to hang. So he grabbed what he thought was the mane to hang on by. The fact was he had gotten on his horte the wrong-way and was clinging to the tail. In like manner friend Tongue mounted his political hobby horse Inst week. Every level headed voter knows that the democrats being in power in 1392, was the result not the cause of au era of commercial depression. The last straw to break the camel's bark was the Mc Kinley high tariff bill. Tongue proved this by his own statements. His own words showed that the manufacturing industries had been fostered until Ihey exceeded in amount those of P.ritain and France combined. But he did not and can not show how these goods are to be disposed of, with his party's boast of a home trade of 96 per cent, and only 4 per cent, foreign. A re stricted home market catased by exces sive high tariff cannot absorb them. Britain with little more than half the production, requires the markets of th world under a free trade policy to keep herself going, and by what hocus pocus the United States can sell nothing and yet remain prosperous can no more be i .i .. . ueuiuiisiraicu luau ii can oeanowniDat the tai'or gets rich who makes only his ' own clothes or the ihoey-maker wno himself, wears all the shoes he makes, When Tongue declared that the W i! son bill was the creator of such an era) of commercial depression bs we are now passing through, he was hanging over the tail of bis horse. The democrats have not improved matters much during their term of of fice we will admit, partly because the Wilson bill is only a straw in tbe right directum and chiefly because they aaopted the bungling and Inlauitous financial policy of their predecessors, wnicn (notwithstanding the flattering promises of consequent prosperity by such papers as the Oregonian) has en tailed nothing but disaster. Tongue told us that prior to 1873 sil ver was not coined, but left the country. And since then we have it stored in the vaults by the hundreds of millions. Yet he could not understand any crime of 1873 and asked for an explanation. On a gentleman ottering to give him the explanation, however, was immedi ately sat upon as there was no time for it. For over 90 years our dollar was de fined in silver, but in 1873 in the mint regulation bill it was changed to gold. Tbe trade dollar being annulled three years afterward. This is the only possible explanation of the divergence between gold and sil ver. It has made all our silver only a token money like paper, or an inferior money according to the market value of thebullioa. Prior to 1873 It wan th best money, as he admits, worth nearly two per cent, more than eold. Now it lies, as he showed, in the gov ernment vaults, a debased and dis graced currency, unfit to pay the debts of the government, yet he asks what was the crime of 1873. Free silver and gold at 10 to 1 means re-establishing it as the best money again. Then we will not nenrl amwifl contracts, ts no banker will refuse the best money. Our government will have an ample coin base to support its promis sory money without resorting to sell ing bonds and with some radical changes in the banking si stem. A crisis will be a thing of the past, and one oi the greatest factors in creating com mercial depression will be forever set at rest. Yours resDectfnllv. -v Argus. CIRCUIT COURT.
