John G . Carlisle at the Manhattan Club. ' Thc Oregonian lias this to say of Port land'a school election . "The result may have been expected by the in tnaj jrs of Wan en's campaign, but it must have been a surprise to Mr. Finley and the A. P. A., and it certainly was a surprise to many thoughtful citizens, not active participant! in- the. campaign, who earnestly desired title result without hoping for it. The election of Wa rrn fiiidieates a very healthy condition of, the public mlud. It can be interpreted in no other way than as an emphatic popular rebuke to the spirit of religious intolerance in state education and to the spirit which seeks to m tuagd the publi c schools in Hie secret lodnero tin of a pioscriptivu order. -Tnure was no good reason why taxypayers situiiM turn out in a body to vole up Mr. Warren ur vote down Mr. I'inley-tw,, equally honest and estimable citizeus, who have de served the codlldeiice of those who know them by fall hful labors in differ. e:it vocations. The itiaioritv ior Warren was thrown less against Finley than against the principle of religious pro scription he represents. That is throughly rebuked mid ought lo be finally crushed. It is hoped thai this spirit of religious intolerance never will reappear in a school election in Portland." HE WANTS TO KNOW Mr. Editor: I want to know first how it is some tilings can be done so quickly, and 2d, why it sometimes takea so long for the press to find these same things out . The first question ii suggested by ev( tits' of recent occurence wherein a number ol "sweated" gold coins were circulated in the city and ultimately traced perilously close to Bro. Read of hank robbing fame The second question Is suggested bv the silence of the Oregonian reporter usually so prompt In giving the news to the public. I will now return to question No. Land to be more explicit, assert that during the middle part of last week a felony was committed to-wit: A number of 120 pieces bad been "sweated'' and au attempt had been made to pass them which was unsuc cessful and led to the discovery that the coins had been tampered with. An investigation carried the matter so close to the Rev. J . C. Read he soon develop ed strong symptoms of spasms or nervous terror. Something had to be done. A (riend hied himself away to his honor, Judge Hayes, and makes "complaint" alleging that Bro. Read was in a bad way and liable to have "something." And now, Mr. hditor, activity begins. Read la too ill to come to the court lor fear k-e might have "aomething" on the way, hence his honor, who is sitting on the "bench" (happy bench, precious bench), gets off, and taking the "bench" (exalted bench) under his arm (meta phorically) and, accompanied by the sheriff goes quickly lo Mr. Read, quickly resumes his seat on the bench (blessed bench) and as the Salem train is about due the examination quickly begins, and we assume must of nccas-ity have been conducted aomewlmt as follows: Judge Mr. Res 1,'are you insane? Mr. Read Yes. vnur honor, QJudge Are yon extsemiyinane. Keaa Yes, your honor. ,, Judge Mr. Read, would you (ike to go to the asylum? Read Yes, your honor, for I can't control mvaelf. JudgeGentlemen, It is quite clear to me that Mr. Read wants to go to the asylum. While the same is conclusive that he ia insane, and I decide- acc rd-iugly. Judge Mr. Sheriff, vou will convev Mr. Read to Salem immediately and get him admitted to the asylum if possible belore he recovers. Delays are danger ous, "luak" "vamose" "scat." , Lo comotive whistle In distance Exit Read and sheriffon the run, the former ha'-ing a good led which hemain'ained until ssfe aboard train. Now, why this haste we can't, blame Read, for matters were getting decidely warm for him, neither can we suppose the judge or sheriff would cover up any wrong. On, no; these two un crnptible old Romans might wink at a criminal (if good looking) but they would nevir wink at crime; perish the thought. How then solve the problem? This is the thing that is perplexing the poople and I modestly offrtr the following solution: Be it remembered that Hometime ago Read organized a church in Oregon City and appointed ceitaia deacon, Unlimited as to number, quite limited as to piety, hut still taking them by and large, a pretty fair lot of deaicon, among them, if my memory serves, we rind two shining lights to wit: Deacons Hayes and Mnddock, Now what more natural than lor Mr. Read to throw himself into the arms of his deacons. or why have deacons at all, if on can not use them. Had the. deacons failed; Read still had the flute player, but the deacons were true and got him off jn time. Moral: "In the day of tioui-le put y'our trust in deacons." Sklaii.
