Political parties are seemingly -moro or less at variance in this country, more for selfish aggrandizement than for a vigorous advocation of the truest prin ciples that a true and enlightened gov ernment need to foster. High position, the emoluments of office and the social elevation apparent, moves and strengthens the ambitious, sets the political machinery at work for what there is in it, to that exteut, that the efficiency of public morals often be come dethrowned to gratify a selfish wish.and the harder the needed pressure to be brought to bear, the more succinct the determination to reach the gjal. Tney rivet, every theme to possibilities by making un merited promises which are seldom ful filled, wink at oppoaing elements like ancient patriarchs of the renown d fame of "Good Lord and good devil." Many of tbem, while in position as servants of the people, thrust their hands into the till anxious for shining lore, pleasing laurels and that which sums up in dollars and cents-. The wishes of the people are therefore kept in the back ground being of the least importance Thus the conduct and tendencies of many politicians are far from being in harmony with public sen timent. They will allow themselves to become crammed into a narrow compass to satisfy the wishes of d igmaiic lobby ists that tread the balls of legislation to effect their purpose, or to promote the interests of some syndicate of concen trated capital, where .the rights and franchises of the people are endangered. They use their own political strength forgetful of its consequences, and when questioned, try to satisfy the criticism by remarking that "the people do not know what they want themselves." The people thus ignored and borne down may kick and kick, while legis lation goes on, if not in harmony with good usage or potent with urgent in fluence. There is great need of reformation in our political government, or among the trusted servants of the people, who ought to be ever actuated by elements of justice, but the sponsor often becomes lost In the political whirlpool, shackled by the machinery of monetary power, much agHinst the wishes of hi constitu ents. Straight, honest administration if what the country most needs and the future success f any paity on this must depend, or tW will towti in a state ol universal contempt. Landslides will follow landslides nntil the verdict of the people will be noted In a more resolute form. Our system of government needs to be inviolate, like an invulnerable monu ment, standing before . the storms of earth, shining with brilliant , magntf- JjcBnorsine frott the tramps of millions who momentarily glance at Its ronnded sphere in a state of unwearied content ment. .1 Inquiry says, who bIisII strike the blow? The tidal wave of honesty must subver the political mackinatlon, which thunders at the dour, with such force that it has a tendency to sh;ver the structure. While the problem in one sense of the word is mathematical, it partakes of the most astonishing social evils in a broadersennejttherefore behooves every patriotic American to bee inn an I Id 1 1 member of the com mod wealth, free of criticism or laiiit, in order to save the nation from disastrous consequences. It will not do far nny party to longer hold up men that are subjects of reproach. None but the. honest, ptudent, intelli gent and trustworthy should be al lowed to enter the vanguard of sway for public legislation. It will not do to ex periment with candidates, the best ought to be choaon in every community. You will often hear, it repeated on every corner of the street that "politics are rotten to tlui verv core." How long can the country stand this deroga tory view of lost pride? Men seem to gnaw at the head c f the nation with impunity and the people" seem helpless to prevent it. "Own." A Household reature. D. W. Fuller, of Canajoharie, N.
