DiHtnuco in properly mensured by the tiiuo iiud expense incurred iu tritvnrHing it, euyg tbe L. A. W. Bulletin. This in the popular mothod of enmpntiug it in all cities. It should be go conHidered by furmors. The distance a farmer lives from market is not a queHtion of miles, but of tho roads be must truvel to react'. WISDOM COMES WITH EXPERIENCE. there. How many hours and bow many horses does it require to haul a load to market? When thus measured, ten miles of good, smooth highway are not as far as a few miles of mud and stones. A road over which one horse conveys tbe load is only half as long as it would be were two horses) required. Aa impasaalrte road ia an impossible distance. TBe trot ting ioad.is not so long as the creeping road, and not near so leoc as the sticking road. The farm ers are learning sill of thai -colored mad on Mi si asked bow far ft was to 4 town tejlied, "Ef 701 go by ox cart, hif'i i mighty longways, an ef you walk hit's a right smart dis tance; ef yen tide a horse hit ain't near so fer, an ef yon go on de kyars hit's only jes' si little piece ; but ef you go by telegram hit's right hyar. " This is the whole matter in a nutshell Any enterprising real estate man in laying out a subdivision to a city knows that the first thing to do is to provide good means for getting to and fro. Side walks are built, streets macadamized and car lines established. . The distance is measured wholly by the time needed in going to and 'from and the charac ter of the transportation. Farmers should follow this same plan. They should lessen distance by building speedy, pleasant roads. A pleasant road is seldom too long. A bad road is never short enough. Daily Health Laws. Dr. Miles' Heart Cure R"? ilsattk WHY GOOD ROADS ARE NEEDED. Every Farm Should lis Connected With th Arteries of Commerce. It is reasonable to predict tlmt road improvement is destined to spread with great rapidity iu the next ten years, and tlmt capitul which heretofore built rail roads wUl now seek investment iu fine macaduiuized roads, says the New York Pout. The first necessity for dovoloping a country of the size of the United States was a system of ruilrouds thut wonld bind together the widely sepa rated points of industry and population, and tbe construction of sncb a stupen dous system absorbed moHt of the energy and capital of onr financiers. But the country now is better supplied with railroads than any other on the fuco of the globe, and the limit to tho exten sion of long railroad lines is practically reached in many parts of tho country. It is impossible to have every small ham lot and village connected with tbe main railroad lines by short branches, but the transportation problem cannot be said to be solved until every small place and farm of any Bize is connected with tbe great arteries of commerce by means of fine macadamized roads. It is this necessity for building more and bet ter common roads that makes the ques tion such a burning one today. Tbe next generation must devote itself to tbe construction and improvement of common roads, feeding tbe railroads with the products of the great agricul tural regions. Goad Beads Isde. - v If we could have good roads it would dWmtfr to the value of -farm- paafiagty than all the other publio improvements put together ever have. It would reduce tbe cost of getting our crops to market m-half, and in the saving of feed that ia now fed 'to 'idle horses" it would amount to sum that staggers the im agination. t Every day that a team remains idle it is something for which no return will ever be received. If we had good roads tbe teams could be used on tbe farm when the ground was in condition and tbe crops could be hauled to market at such times as farm work could not be prosecuted. Farm Mews. Use the Scraper Oftea. Ruts never should be filled with stone or refuse matter. The care and attention of the overseer.directed, toward improv ing the road ofteuer than once iu the spring and once in . the full, will' pro duce a cure of ruts. Tbe scruper kept in his shed during the summer months should be taken out for an airing and run over the road in his district at least twice a month, if not oftener. The ruts can thus be cut down and filled up, and the condition of the mind of the trav eler, as well as that of the" road, can be materially improved. Isaao B. Potter. Influence of tbe Bicycle. The talk about the political inflneuco of tho bicycle clubs is probubly lurgoly uncalled for. But the personal inflnnuco of the wheelmen will certainly be felf in many quarters for good roads, and perhaps thut influence may reach into politics so fur as this one great public question is conecrned.
