LOCAL EVENTS. ,. JIimiu Atiirmi vh. The battle o( Jtenmothenes. Last Baturday eveninir wan one of the Joyful and enthusiastic events In the history of the Hesperian Literary Club. The meeting was called to order by l'r f. 8. W. Holmes, who delivered a brief address, which was much appreciated by the many em bryo orators, who compose the mem bership of their society. Jacob Tonip- kins, in his familiar fascinating style, rendered an excellent reading The debate, "Resolved, That the Inventor Benefits the World More than the Statesman," was won by the negative. lie affirmative was led by Harry Al len, his argument and logic showed that be was sincere in his declaration and bis remarks added another golden leaf to his "oratical crown." He was fol lowed by his colleague, Edgar Meresse, who warmly enforced the declaration of his predecessor. The negative was led by the young silver-tongued orator.Howard Brownell, who made a powerful and el oquent plea in favor of the statesmen. He was followed by Charlie Babcock, whose decisive argument made the af firmative side tremble. Herbet Shaw rendered a very fine recitation, which was much applauded by the society. Last, but not least was the beautiful recitation of Miss'.'. who displayed won Jarful and promising talent as an elocutionist. This recitation attracted the attention of the whole as sembly and the noise made by the drop ping of a pin could have been distinctly heard. Friday, December 20, the first debate of the series, between Park Place and the Hesperian will take place. All are invited. A Listener. Mok it Thoublb for Daty. Alexander 8. Baty, now under arrest in Portland charged with the forgery of the name of J. and . Harrington, farmers, living at Highland, to a note and securing $25 on it from Ldgar A. Goodncugh, is now in for more serious trouble. Last Thurs day another charge of forger was booked against him by the prosecuting attorney, and the methods emphyed by the prisoner to raise money show the craftiness of a designing and dangerous person. He tried to negotiate a note for $000 to which he had forged the names of J. W. Shattuck, J. VV. Law rence, J. P. Powell, J. J. Robertson, Geo. Renny. H. 8. Harvey, Wm Gade nike, Chas. Cleveland and Parcy Gessie of Oresham. Queen Esther The cantata Queen Esther was put on at smvely's hall on riu ay and Saturday evenings in a very creditable manner under the supervis ion of Prof. F. K. Hepburn. Much credit is also due to Mrs. Heath and Mrs. Norris for their work. About 100 people were on the stage. The leading parts of Mrs. W. P. Hawley, Mrs. E. E.Charman, Mrs. J. W. Gray, Mrs. A. 8- Dresser, V. Harris, W. A. Askin, C. A. Miller and II . P. Bestow were rendered in first-class style with out a hitch. Thanks are also due to P. F. Morey for lights furnished and to Mrs. Mc Adams and Miss Monroe for drilling the children to the chorus and to Miss Spangler for acting as pianist. The total receipts were about $120 with expenses . of about $85, leaving about $12 as the net proceeds for the Y. M . C. A gymnasium. Annual Roll' Call! The annual reunion and roll call of the Baptist church of this place will take place on New Years day. There will be two services, oue beginning at 2 :30 and the other at 7:30 p.m. Every member expected to be present, if possible, at least at one of these services and res pond to his or her name at the roll-call and if unable to be present it is request ed that there will be a response by letter sent either to the pastor or clerk ao that all may be represented on records. Besides the roll-call there will be other services of an interesting character. Go prepared to stay be tween the services aud enjoy a social time and have a bask et dinner together at 5 :30 p. m. Democratic Statb Meeting. Mr. Napoleon Davis, secretary of the demo cratic state central committee, has Issued a call for a meeting to be held in Portland, Tuesday, January 7. The pur pose of the meeting will le to arrange for holding a convention and fixing a basis of representation. Mr. D. W. Sears, chairman of the committee, who has been in ill-health lor some months past, is now so far recovered as to give some attention to party affairs, and he pro poses to have the democratc in fighting trim early in the campaign . The demo cratic state central committeman for Clackamas county is VV. E. Carll. Grand Costumb Ball. A costume ball, with or without masks, will be given at Armory hall on New Years eve December 31st; music by Roos' orchestra, formerly of Del Coronado, Cat. Many valuable prizes will be awarded. Prizes on exhibition at Mc Kittrick's, the shoe man; tickets on sale at Huntley's book store; gentlemen 50 cents, ladies 25 cents The manage ment has decided to offer a handsome trumpet to the ffire company selling th largest number of tickets. No disrepu table characters admitted. LOCAL NEW ITEMS. to Christmas at Presbyterian Church The Presbyterians am preparing for a very novel and interesting entertain ment for Christmas. Instead of the usual tree they will have a genuine Dutch windmill with a Dutch miller who will "grind out" the presents for the little ones. Everything will be as much like Holland as possiole, big wooden shors and all. All are cordially invited to this entertainment on Wed nesdsy evening. A R iusino House Greets tub W kbeb Company. Notwithstanding the fact that the Weber Dramatic Co. has been with us for a week, the house last evening was filled to overflowing by an appreciative audience. The severa characters represented by the really tal ented members of the company were trulv oortraved and in a manner in which tho most critical critic could but bestow words of praise. The AVeber Company has made many friends this city during its stay here, and upon future visits it may be assured of most cordial rwception 'Baker City Democrat. The Weber Company will play all of next week at Rhively's ; prices 25, 35 and 50 cents; Christmas matinee on Wednesday, prices 15 and 25 cents Trial by Jury. The comic opera, "Trial by Jury," will be the next and last production for this season under the direction of Prof. F. K. Hepburn. "Trial bv Jurv" is one of the best works of Gilbert Sullivan, author of Pinafore. The music is bright, full of comedy, and you wont be able to stop laughing. Mr . Askin will make out the cast. Several resolu tion to congress for improvement of Willamette river were adopted. The road up the hill at the south ern end of town was discussed and several plana proposed. One plan was to build a roadway over the railroad at the flour mill, to cost $1800, and another was to build one under the track on Third street to cost .$4000, The matter was left in hands of Prest. Some of the cars have stoves or heaters which seldom have heat In them The cars of this road will hereafter run down First Street in Portland instead of stopping on Madison.
