The area in huckleberries, he says, would amount to five acres, bit it ia scattered in patches over about 100 acre?. lie has hauled away from the patch over CdOO pounds, and has sold another thousand pounds, realizing on llie whole nearly 1400. He looks on his iiucklebnrry patch as the most profitable purl of his farm, and has bad a man employed for six weeks to watch it, aa people come from a distance to gather the berries for him . Mrs. La Forest of this city has now ripe on her trees in her garden some very fine figs. It it con sidered quite a triumph of I ome in dustry that figs of the size and quality of these shonld be ripened in Oregon this early in the year. Mrs. La Forest's trees have been crowing in the garden here for the past 25 years. A second , crop is coming on and a third crop is expected before the trees Btop work for the season. Hardware has raised 100 per cent in price in some instances and glass has already risen 25 per cent and is likely to take another rise; lumber has also gone up. The postnflice at Gladstone lias been ordered discontinued. A petition is being circulated and has been signed by 75 or 80 residents for a continance. Only two refused to sign. Gladstone is grow ing and 47 houses have been there in the last two years and should have a postollice . Superintendent Howell ol the water works has been changing the pumps to the different mains, as mentioned in last week's issue, and now the small pump witli 75 pounds pressure will furnish water for Main street and the large pump with 175 pounds will pump tor the hill." The State Insurance Co. paid the loss of $850 of Mr. ICIinger's in full. "In Uuenco" was brought to bear upon the adjuster which forced him to settle in full, but he only wanted to give half and claimed over-insurance. They did not claim over-insurance when they received the premium. A small boy picked up a counterfeit 110 piece on the bank of the river Sun day. On Monday evening it was amusing jo see "grown" men buying Irom a fakir nuts wrapped in paper at four bits each, the purchaser supposing each package contained a fl bill. The seller told those that "bit" that they could buy nuts much cheaper at the grocery. He claimed he paid a license to sell nuts only; but several people looked "sold." Lumber Tki'st The Portland lumber combine have raised the prices from 20 to 25 per cent. The new rates are: No. 1 stepping, $25 i No. 1 flooring, 10; No. 2 flooring, $12; No. 1 rustic and ceiling, $14; No. 2 rustic and ceiling, $10 common rough, $7; common dres sed, $8 ; lath, $150. A few years ago common rough, w hich can be taken as an index of the lumber market, was sold at $10 a thousand ; during the p ist few months, however, it has been sel ling as low as $6 and $5 50, which has meant a margin of loss for the mill men, and the advance to $7 per thousand will put them about 10 per cent to the good .
