Of this North America, mainly this country, controls 1,200,WO,000, while all Europe, Including Great Britain Francis, fiermanv. Bolfium and the Netherlands, all the great "capitalist' nations, control but 2,300,000,000. In other words this country holds about balf as. much of the world' "banking power" as all Europe com blned. and greatly more than any single country In Europe or the world "tIio control of the world's finance means to any country that holds themostery of the world's commerce and the chief share In the world's wealth, with all of influence which such dominance implies. That control Is within our grasp If we do not make the mistake of ren dering any part of our currency unsound and thus impairing the value of our public and private securities. It is the easy task of this generation to give our great Republic the imperial place among the nations of the earth. Sinci money can be borrowed on first' class security In Portland at 6 percent, straight, and call loans are made in New York city at 1 to 2 per cent., it does : not seem that money is scarce. It Is true, however, that there is not a suf ficiency of it in circulation, which can only be corrected by a general increase in business, which will withdraw the deposits from the banks. Tiia 10 to 1 silver men are doing their cause injury by advocating that the United State j restablish free silver coinage at the ratio regardless of the nations of Europe. This country will never take such a foolhardy step. In ternational bimetallism is the only practicable course. CITY COUNCIL' E. F.
