Thil letter waa posted in the form of notices at various places on the Cascade reserve, it la claimed, are being torn down, and, if the parties who are doing this can be caught, there will he trouble ahead for them. The next day Driggs collected the fine and ofljred to turn over his receipt for fees and the balance of fine in money, to which Fouls objected. Tins led to some "lively talking'' and oil the way home at noon on Seventh street stops Fouts struck DMggs, but they were parted before damage was done. On Tuesday Bob Gardner swore out a warrant for Fouts charging him with assault on Driggs. Fouts plead guilty to the charge and paid hla flue. On Wednesday even ing the matter was ''aired" in the council meeting which resulted In Fonts and Driggs being atked to resign. U left the room and Fouts refused to re ign. Driggs was then removed and new recorder tiaiioted for with no elec tion. Thursday morning Driggs was again appointed city attorney by Mayor Straight. They will both probably be removed If they do not resign, which they should have done at first and saved further trouble. Enrroiis Vie-n tub Falls. V Bmalley and of the Northern Pacific, and Is managing the exuurdon for the road . Asskinmknt. Hamilton Brothers, whose store has been In charge of James ?liaw as trustee since April 10th nn a chattee mortgage for $U3'X), made an assignment on Saturday to C. 0. T. Williams. The schedule of liabilities foots up $20,7-15 G3. of which $7204 are due to merchants in Portland, San Francisco and the East. The assets aggregate about $25,000, of which $12, 000 is real estate, incumbered for $8102; $.3775, the store and stock, mort gaged for its full value, and $350 small notes and accounts, all ci which are held by certain creditors as collateral security. This move does not especially change the condition of the embarrassed concern, but it makes all unsecured creditors share alike In the proceeds of the estate, after the securities are satis fled. Suit over a Iiu'Nk. a suit to re cover $240 for a trunk and wearing ap parel lost July 29. 180.3, by Emma D, Rolfe, a passenger from Oswego on one of the Oregon boats, was on trial in Portland on Tuesday in Judge Hurley's court. The action is against tbeOregon City Transportation Co. and Mrs. Rolfe' Is the plaintiff. The company alleges that the baggage weighed 300 pounds, and that Mrs. Rolfe obtained no check for It, and that the ticket she bought un der these circumstances entitled her to passage only. The baggage it is al leged, waa safely landed upon the wharf, and Mrs. Rolfe was informed that if the baggage was left there it should be at her risk, and what became of the trunk the company does not know. Reinbold, two men from the Walla Walla county, were arrested st Gresham on Monday by Deputy Sheriff" C. G Eields, on a warrant trn 1 1 by Vice Presieent Oilman, of the Mount Hood & Barlow Road Co., charging them ith obstructing travel on that road and forcing their way over the road without paying legal toll. The families of the prisoners came with them, and are now camped in their prairie schooners near the Abernethy bridge, on the edge of town. Tlie man are in jail awaiting trial before Justice Dixon on Friday. They expect to reach the Siletx by the tima the reservation lu ll are opened for settlement in July. Fire at Sherwood. A fire at Sher wood on Saturday evening destroyed the following buildings and contents: McConnell & Iier's store, loss $12:)0; Sherwood hdl, loss $15)0; Young's barber shop, loss $400; S. P. R. H. de pot and toolhome, 1 is $HJ; Snerw oJ hotel, loss $1 W0; total loss 520.1. Tne fire seems to have orginated from a defective flue in the store of McConnell & Her. The store carried some insur ance. The depot will probably be re built but it is not kn wn whether the other losers will do so or n it. Tiik Hatchery toBe Bhi.t. A large lorce of men was sent out Monday to begin work on th - llsh hatchery at the headwaters ot the Clackamas on the location selected by Fish Protector Mc Gnire. The construction v ill be under the supervision of Mr. J. G. Reed and Mr. Snurguon. while Mr. Meldrum will bene charge of the hauling of the material which, for lack of roads, will be carried in on horses. The work will be under the auspices of the salmon uackers. who have determined to test thoroughly the feasibility of artificial propagation. Lunii.rry of the County. Judge Mc Bride, of this judicial district, in the case of Mary Pringle against Columbia county, suit for $500 damages for des trucuon of property through the alleged carelessness of a road suyervisot,has do cided that a county Is not responsible for the remit of its officers' negligence or inexperience. In this case the su pervisor in opening a road authorized by tlie commissioners, in burning brush, let the fire get away from him and des troy an orchard for the plaintiff, Tne court held that the blame rested with tlie supervisor. Children's Day will be appropriately observed at the Presbyterian church next Sabbath. Special exercises by and lor the children have been prepared for the Sabbath school hour. 10 toll a. m. The morning preaching services will also be given overto the children. The pastor will preach a special sermon (il lustrated) to the little ones. At 3 p. m . there will will be a public presentation of diplomas to those of the Junior En deavor Society who have finished their course of study; Preaching as usual at 8 in the evening. 1 he public iscordi- lly invited to all tliese services. The Mechanics' Mill company filed articles of incorporation with the secre tary of state Saturday. C C. Bobbins, T. 8. Lawrence and H. E. Harris are the incorporators, with a capital stack of $2,000 in shares of $100, Intending to manufacture sash, doors, etc. Messrs. Robbins and Lawrence recently pur chased the old CalitT factory and H. E. Harris was formerly engineer at the ice works. Awarded Highest Honors World Fair. mm Clarence Porter has opened a black smith's shop at corner of Maui and Fourth streets, the stand recently va cated by Mr. Maple. Charles Linn was arrested on Wed nesday on a warrant charging him with assault on J. J. Pankey. Linn gave $100 bonds for his appearance Friday, Miss Anna Anderson, sister of Mrs. John Hill, arrived on Wednesday from Silver Lake.
