Under or dinary conditions falling prices check production, but they failed to do so in this case, doubtless owing to tlio lact that the discovery of rich mines and improved processes had so far cheap' ened production that silver mining con tinned profitable in spite of the dec line in prices. In these twenty-three years the annual production of silver nearly quadrupled, a very sufficient reason for the fall of price. In 1870 silver bullion sold at $1,328 per fine ounce; in 1892, at eighty cents. Here was a fall of .528 per ounce, and yet the production of 1892 was nearly four times as great as that of 1870. Such prices and such a rate of production would have been impossible had not the cost of producing silver greatly diminished. It will be noticed, also, that the sup. ply of gold, after suffering a temporary reduction, has also greatly increased. It ran Irom $107,000,000 in 1870 to 130,- JOO.000 in 1892, and last year it was from 1175,000,000 to 1SO,0'JO,000. While, therefore, gold did not keep pace with silver, the production has far exceeded the growth of business or of population The production of gold in 1894 exceedod the production of both metals in 1870. Is the summer before the beginning of the civil war, the Japanese embassy . was the most drawing curd at fashionable places of entestainment'liTTsew York city. "Society" visited the theatres to see Tommy and the rest of the quaintly attired Japs. Tommy was tho cutest and sharpest of the wholo batch of under-sized, dark-skinned orientals. He saw what was coming. Now Japan con tains millions of Tommies, for, during the last third of a century, the eyes of Its 40,000,000 were opened to the ad van tages of modern civilization, Japan lean ed a little too soon for the health of the Chinese empire that in order not to be run over and smashed by the car of progress, it Is necessary to get in and ride yourself. It is hardly conceivable ' that a nation stowed away on an archi peligo along the eastern mainland of Asia would in a few years develop into ormidablo military power which dures show its teeth to the crowned bullies of Europe. No nation that would main tain its prestige, can afford to neglect attention to the latest appliances fur man-killing. Bomb time during the '00s Captain Strain, an American military officer, crossed the Isthmus of Darien, from ocean to ocean, with a handful of men. The exploration party endured terrible sufferings and several of its members perished. Hitherto, no white man had traveled that tropical wilderness. A Kentuckian who recently crossed the isthmUB claims that it offers a far cheaper and more practicable route for an inter oceanic canal than the Nica ragua route. The Nicaragua canal would have a length of 170 miles and cost 1100,000,000, whereas the Darien canal, from the Gulf of San Miguel to the Bay of Candiluria, would be only 24 miles long and cost $00,000,000. Members of congress should look into . this matter. Larch quantities of American shoes and boots ftro being shipped to England. The American shoe manufacturer, with the aid of machinery and "toam work," is supplanting the Englishman in his own market. A London paper says that though "the prices paid ill England to operatives are in many cases double those in the United States, yot shoes can be freighted across the Atl intic and sold in England for less than shoes of tho same quality can be made there." Thus tree trade in leather and hides has stimulated the shoe Industry of New England.
