The closing exercises of Canemah school will be held at the school house, commencing at 1 o'clock p. m. on Wednesday of next week. Mr. McConnell of McConnell & Her, merchants of Sherwood, was in town Saturday and reports roads between Stafford and the county seat In-bad (hape. Mr, and Mrs. Chaa. D, Latourette entertained a number of young people on Friday evening in honor of Miss Maud Upton of Portland and Miss Birdie Green of Salem. It is said that the Bandon woolen mills are running 24 hours per having secured extra workmen from this place. The mills give socks free to those who sell them wool. The steamer Altona was seized in Portland on Monday for alleged viola- lion of navigation laws by carrying coal oil. The owners furnished the neces sarv bail and steamer was released. The Oregon Mfg Co. last week com pleted a new building next to their soap factory which will be used as a wool pullery, whereby they will be able to buy the pelts as well as the wool from the farmers. The East Side Railway will run special cars on Sunday afternoon to accommodate those who wisn to see the famous old steamer S. 6. Reed blown up, about 16 miles below Portland. Fare for round trip, 90 cents. The memorial services this year will be held in the Baptist church Sunday morning. It is expected that the other churches will unite in these services. In the evening the pastor will preach a special sermon to young men. The grand court at McMinnville last week accepted the invitation to celebrate Forester's day at thia place on August 15tb. under the auspices of Court Robin Hood. J. D Humphrey of this place was chosen grand junior beadle. Multnomah lodge, A. F. & A. M., was officially visited by Grand Master P. S. Malcom on last Saturday evening. A delegation from Portland attended, and the lodge had the largest number present of any meeting this year Over 20 c'aims have been filed in the Red Rock minning district in the south eastern part of the county. Henry Meldrum, John Howland and Jack Blunt returned from surveying the same last week. They report good prospects for the miners. Next Sabbath morning there will be no preaching service at the Presbyter ian church on account of the anion memorial day exercises at the Baptist church.
