Mr. Kelly waa watching the sacks go down the chute to the boat and reached over to prevent the sacks from going overboard when one sack ahot to one aide and struck him, knock' ing him in the water. It waa yet quite dark and he could hardly be seen in the water, but a line waa thrown to him aa he rose to the surface and he managed to get hold of it and waa helped aboard nearly chilled through. Tha county court has offered a reward of $300, The evidence before the coroner's jury contained nothing about any "toe amount pension money beipg received aa first reported.except the regular quarter ly allowance of $40, which the deceased drew ftt 8ilverton about the middle of December. No motive for the murder can be assigned, unless to obtain that pittance. Brown was not known to hate any enemy. Bihtiiday Pabtv. A very pleasant surprise was tendered Mra. Kugelmann at her home in Falla View last Satur day evening. It being the 48th anni. eraary of her birthday. Gesner, our joint senator, managed to spend one day in this county before the legislature met. He waa here last Friday and returned Monday. II. M. Templeton, of North Adams, Mass., the largest "town" in the United States, arrived here last week, and has harge of the finishing department of the woolen mill. The county court on Monday viewed the landslide on the hatchery road, which covered the toad for about 40 feet with six feet of earth, and ordered it opened. Marshal Burns on Tuesday captured two runaway boys from Portland and returned them to their homes. Their names are Charles Kirman and uennie Bernstein. On Saturday, January 12, at his real dence, Rev. A. J. Montgomery united n marriage M r. A. K. McCaskill and Miss Bella McKenzie, botli of Mult nomali county. Clackamas county will pay a slate tax of $15,074,08 on a levy of three mills, the lowest for eight years. Last year the state tax was 4 3 mills. The valuation this year ia $18,000 less than last year. The union meeting of the four churches at the M. E. church are well attended. Oglesby, aged 22 years and 6 day 3. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church at 11 clock on Thursday. It is reported that there is a dangerous hole in the Oregon City road about half mile thia aide of Good's bridge across the Molalla and near the Canby and Howard'a mill road. The supervisor should have attended to it ere this. At a meeting of the board of fire dele gates this week a resolution was passed prohibiting the ringing of the fire bells except for an alarm of fire or to toll for dead firemen. Thia waa in deference to the wishes of people who are startled when the bells are used to call meetings ol the fire companies. The recent rains have brought the river up again, and it reached 25 feet above low-water mark below the fall and above the falls about 2 feet. The locks had to be closed to naviga tion. A lot of log3 escaped from the Gladstone mill boom Saturday night. The locks were opened Wednesday. Saturday night's wind storm moved the house of Mi. Phillips, nt Gladstone from its foundation. Telegraph and telephone wires were prostrated by the atorm, but the telegraph line were aoon restored to working order. Several electric lights were disabled..
