Judge Hayes no doubt is ambitious to make a good record, which be will do If he is a careful financer, and Itn, OREGON CITY, DEO. 21, 1804. CHRISTMAS, Christmas is most properly the day on the people will neither fail of feeling children, for Christ loved little children "Of such," said He who Is worshipped by hundreds of millions at the eon of I 111. At.. LlnnilAM ftf tlA.OAn ' ' Whoever possesses not the frankness, the honesty of heart, the cleanness of mind, the hopefulness, the cheerfulness and gentleness that characterizes the child, is outside of the kingdom of heaven. Thus the Infant on the mother'! knee becomes her teacher, her guide to Christ's kingdom, to the gate of heaven. Were there no little children, no opportunity for man at every generation to retnrn to first prin clples, but were birth and maturity to follow in close succession, humanity would become brutalized . The greatest blessing in a household Is tlie child. It is meant, therefore, that the day on which Christendom celebrates the birth of the icreat Founder of its militant faith, the children should be made happy by Christmas trees and presents But true parent no less enjoys the occasion, for he live over again in the joys of bis offspring the innocence of bis own childhood when so little, even a big red apple or a nickel's worth of candy, made him happier than now does a hundred dollars. We couldn't get along without the children I ' From time immemorial mankind has celebrated the end of the old year and the beginning of the new, because there will soon appear a new spring and a gratitude nor of expressing It. Tax payers have their eyes open because their wallets are light. It's very evident that the strength shown in the late elections by the People's party was largely owing to the disaffection of true democrats who were not satisfied with the state of affairs in their own rarty. This will not always be, unless the "powers that be'' at Washington give us unpopular lobula tion at the closing session ol con. reus Catering to monopolies, bankers, elc. might make temporary breaks perpetual, however. Mr. Cleveland should take heed .Jacltonville Timet . Tug price of wheat remains at 43 cents, but the market is weak. The supply exceeds the demand. If it be true that the increase in wheat pro duction is not equal to the increase in the world's population, it must be con. sidered that, if for no other reason than the increase of poverty among the masses during the last 12 months, there may be a greater consumption ol cheaper foods. Tin country's circulating medium J ready consists of seven sorts of money gold, gold certificates, silver dollars, silver certificates, greenbacks, Sherman notes and national bank bills of the denomination of a dollar new summer, a revivincation oi nature, or over, secretary Carlisle's propo with its manifold births of tender grass, sition would add two more sorts of blades and flowers, of animals and birds money another kind of national bank of the forest in spring nature in her currency and state bank notes to th royal robe of green looks loveliest to be number, PARK PLACE. Prepare for the coming of Santa Clause. . The lato rains has placed the roads in a critical oonditlon, John Straight, of this place, has taken charge of the dulivnry wagon for his brother, Duck Straight of Oregon City. If some of the Park Place boys wear black eyes, don't think anything itrsngo, for there la a puir of boxing gloves in the vicinity. A certain young man of this place went "straight" way to spend the evening with his best girl. He was eating apples by the glare of the fire, when he unfortunately bit on an apple seed, resulting in breaking off one of his front teeth . lie has tkw heartfelt sympathy of the writer. The home talent of this city have a very interesting literary society, which meets every Saturday evening at 7 :30 Everybody is cordially invited. The sole agent of the Gladstone real estate asks the question, "Where could a fairer, lovelier, spot bo selected?" The editor of litis article thinks it a very easy question to answer. "Why! Park Place." We people of Park Place look "down" ou Uladstune every time we cast a glance in that direction. Park Place is quite a thriving little city. We have at present a public school build ing, church, store, postoflice, photograph gallery, butchcrshop, blacksmith shop and picker-slick factory. All we lack is a motor line. But one advantage we have over Gladstone is that at any time we can get a tie pass to Oregon City Mrs. Oilman Parker and her sister Mrs. Severs, of Gladstone, were visitin friends in this vicin ty this week. December 14th. Sunshine. JOHN BOYD CTHACHER A WITNESS He Fully Verifies Disputed World! Fair Disputed Award. John Doyd Thacher is laconic and de cislve in his statements. During the lively campaign just closed In New York, this marked him especially as chairman of 'the dum'H.-ratic state com- diitiee. It W4s equally true of hi in as chairman of the executive committee on awards at the world's fair. This lithe positive and sententious way In which he verifies in an official letter, the hon ors won by Dr. Price's Baking Powder. "I herewith enclote you an official copy of your award, which in due time will be Inscribed in the diploma and for warded." Thus the question respecting the award, raised by an envious New York rival, is settled beyond cavil. This same rival by the way Is widely advertising an- award for itself. The official records prove this claim wholly fale as they show the New York pre tender was not so much as an exhibitor at the world's fair. followed by harvest of meadow and grain field. No matter if historians do say that the Child of Bethlehem was not born exactly on Christmas, or the day of the Christ-mss. It is the event, the occasion we celebrate. Even in the observation Christmas has, from one point of view and that an important one, been a great advance. Thanks to Luther Wickllffe, Henry the Governor Lord has appointed Willi Dunniway as his private secretary. Mr Dunniway is a proofreader on the Ore gonian and a nephew of Harvey Scott LOGAN. Yet if we compare tbe time of Luther and Eras mus and Leox with ours, the advance is almost inconceivable. We have ap proached much nearer than they and their cotemporaries to the ideal man as he Is represented to us in the words and the life of Him whose birth we celebrate on Christmas. His brother, Giles Sarver, will also finish his contract for Mr. Hawley, of 30 acres. Mr. Stimpson of Highland was in this settlement last week trading horses. He made several trades and one trade he made with Mr. fallert did not seem to satisfy Mr. Fallert entirely as he has comtnonced a suit to replevy his animal ed that in the five months before the bond issue the reserve bod not decreased at all, but had been held at a little above $00,000,000, there is every reason to believe that tbe people who sold their gold to the treasury for the new bonds are merely drawing it out again by turning in their currency. It is plain that the government cannot keep the gold it may get from the banks and capitalists of the financial centers of this county. While the supply of visible gold in New York, Boston and the other cities remains no greater than at present, the banks will not let it re' main in tbe treasury ao long as there is a way to get it out. They have at the best of times none too much to make them feel safe, and if they advance any of it to the treasury they will attempt to get it back. H. A. Clifford of Ban Francisco has patented a voting machine that is imple, accurate and cheap. By its ne the voter can save more than half the time required to stamp an Australian ballot, the vote of each candidate is automatically tamed and counted as Toting proceeds, so the total rote re ceived by each one is known just as soon as the last vote is registered, while tbe costs of an election can be reduced to one-third or even one-fifth of what tbey now ore. If Mr. Clifford's machine! accomplish all these things, there is no reason why it should not and will not be adopted by the different States. The promoters of the new county (Sutton) are now going into tbe matter in a business-like manner and will prob ably succeed. They have concluded to not aak for any territory from Gilliam or Wasco counties, the souther a line coming only to the John Day river. Al 1 the territory tor the new county w ill be taken from the counties of Grant and Crook and will be 52 miles long and 48 miles wide, with an area of 1098 sqnare miles, with Mitchell in the center. The Logan literary is still in fair run ning order and is carried on with great interest to all concerned. The paper is the main feature. There is some talk of a new store be ing started in Logan by a gentlein.ui from Clackamas.
