Editor Courier: The "Stale of Colum bia" is Btill running at a high tide in Kansas City. The last meeting was very lively and well conducted. New ofliiiers were elected but reelected the name governor and same secretary. The subject ol the debate was: RetuUed, That married life is more preferable llinn simile life. It was well discussed on both sides but the negative got away with the ballot. Yours truly, A Columbian. Payment of '03 Taxes. On Tuesday, February 13th, Sheriff Ganong will be ready to receive taxes fur 1893. The warrant giving him authority, to he is sued on Monday, will be for 00 days. Thanks to the quick work of County Clerk Horton and his assistants, the sheriff can begin the collection of taxes nearly six weeks earlier than last year. PERTINENT OBSERVATIONS. I often wonder what pedestrians' thoughts are when they are endeavoring to make their way through the big ac cumulations of mud on our street cross ings, and the question is asked why the city doesn't have a mai to clear off these walks at least once a monlh, re quiring about a day's labor. a. In passing the Salvation Army bar racks the other evening I noticed one of our young grocers Kicking vigorously at the entrance door and raising a com motion in general both inside and out. I should like to know what would be the consequences, if this fellow should create this sort of disorderly conduct at anv oilier religious meeting in the city. . I observe that the Southern Pacific Company have a gang of niin at work at the base ol the bluff, and that they will soon have the Oth street stairway undermined, and alter an accident has occurred in which someone is killed, steps will be taken to prevent nnothei uf like nature. . I understand that there is a man in this city, or rather on the other side of the river, who measures ail of 6 feet in height, and who has a weakly wife scarcely over 4 feet in height, and that Ins fellow m ikes a practice ot annum 2 himself by pounding and whipping her in the presence of neighbors, and has frequently threatened to cut her throat from ear to ear. In the name of human ity I ask why thin outlaw is allowed to run at large, and why he is not tarred and feathered. I am anxious to know why it is that the approach opposite the Congrega tional church is nut finished and why the matter should hang Are so long. If there is a rriestion regarding the le gality of the contract, why not settle it, that the public nuy have tlie lull Den- efit of the street? Nam Welleb The Viola Plank Road. Vioia. Feb. 6, 1894. Editor Courier : Will you olease allow me the privilege of correcting the assertion of J.T.Mason in regard to our plank road? In reply we deny the charge of the road being insulated by mud and water. In short the plank mad ia in a first-class condition. Mr. Mason made (he assertion last summer out on the road where we were nt work-, that be could see more work done there than all the work done down on the Abernethy road. Now for hiin to make auch an assertion is unreasonable and unjust to the few people who worked so hard on the road last summer. Now, if the people on the hill will subscribe as many days' work as we did, and work the road toward Oregon City, it would not be bnt a short time nntil we would have a good road. W. C. Ward.
