The assessors of Oregon in convention assembled at Salem this week, declared hat whereas the last legislature of Ore gon repealed the law relating to the assessing of mortgages and deduction of indebtedness, which repeal has been particularly found to be lavorable to foreign capital and detrimental to home dtal. and to assess properly encum bered with debt witho it deduction for such debt is double taxation, therefore, be it Itrmlced. That we, Ihe assessors of the state of Oregon, believing it to be to the best interest of the musses of the people of the state, do most heartily rjvomtnend that the next legislative as sembly of the state enact a law provid ing for Ins deduction of indebtedness, where a eorrespondingcredit is assessed ,! and providing for the assessing of mort- i j gages and lor collecting taxes on the same. . j yjy 1STKREBT to rM-ouTs k a . . n. . Etlilnr Cuuiivr: The clerk's semi annual report from April 1st, 1803, to November 1st. 1893. shows the money expend 'd for paupers during that peril d was I182U (iU, over f.'ioo per month. The last county report ordered that $20 per month be allowed for the care or keeping of a pauper; expect the best hotel in Oregon UUy would ask no more, lend) ers in the country pay from $10 tot 12 per month, washing included. If the county would contract with some hotel or hoarding house in Oregon City, the county would save money. Our county court is liberal witli the taxpayer's money. Times are easy ; roads in good condition, so lot the pauper have the beat the season affords. The last report of county court pro ceedings states the expense of clearing away slide at Grimm's bluff was $114.22. That road has always and will slide as long as there is anything left to slide, and will someday provide some unlucky traveler with a cheap funeral. If the money that road cost had been spent on the road from Deep creek bridge to the Multnomah county line at Kitchie's, our best and shortest road to Portland, we would have a fair toad. Laborets on county roads receive' $1.75; supervisors, $4; a supervisor as much as two hard-working men and 50 cents to spare. Our county court should have a look at the statue on the court house. It is a good preacher it is the first I look at in coming to Oregon City. Baknahv. LETTER LIST. Blaize, an extensive real estate dealer in Des Moines, Iowa, nar rowly escaped one of the severest at tacks of pneumonia while in the north ern part of that state during a recent blizzard, says the Saturday Review. Mr. Iiluize had occasion to drive several miles during the storm and was so thoroughly chilled that he was unable to get warm, and inside of an hour alter his return lie was threatened with a severe case of pneumonia or lung fever. Mr. Blaize Bent to the nearest drugstore and got a bottle of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, of which he had often heard, and took a number of large doses. He says the eUuct was wonderful and in a short time he was breathing quite easily. He kept on taking the medicine and the next day was able lo come to Des Moines. Mr. Blaize "regards his cure as simply wonderful. For sale by G. A. Harding, druggist. Keeping Cider Sweet. The following scientific manner of t eating cider will preserve lis sweet ness: When the saccharine matters by fermentation are being converted into a'cohol, if a bent tube be inserted air tight into the bung, with Ihe other end in a pail of water, to allow the carbonic acid gas evolved to pass oil without a limiting any air into the barrel, a beverage will be obtained that is fit nectar lor the gods. A handy way is to fill your cask nearly up to the wooden faucet, when the cask is rolled so the bung is down. Get a common rubber tube and slip it over the end of the plug in the faucet, with the other end in the pail. Then turn the plug so the cider can have communication witli the pail. After the water ceases to bubb.e, bottle or store away. The proportion between the values of gold an I silver is mercantile problem altogether.
