Oregon Cltj.Novomber 24, 1893. CITIZESS' TICKET. For Mayor, HIRAM STRAIGHT. For Treasurer, F. S. KELLY. For Councilmen, First Ward, I). F. JAGGAR, C. W. FREDRICKS. Second Ward, .;V J. A. THAYER, ... ... E. M. HOWELL. WHAT WAS THt CITY FOR ITS DKIIT! About two and a half years ago, Ore gon City's debt was in round numbors f28,000.r Since then it lias become double 'that sum. Had thecity valuable permanent Improvements toirtiow for tl increase in indebtedness of (11,000 per annum, there would not be the serious cause for complaint. The grievance is (hat about three-fourths of said Increased Indebtedness has lecn mado piece-meal (or ephemeral purposes, to defray the run ning expenses of the city.'' The city has .new jail, and spent, say, $3000 on Seventh and Main streots, and built solne new stei. What elee is there to show for the $28,000? It is a plain proposition that Oregon City can and should be able to puy, annually, the running expenses of its government, and that, if it cannot do so now, it will be still more incapable four or five years hence when, at the present rate of iticieate, the debt will have dumb up to near .tho (100,000 mark. This folly should certainly cease, and it is easier to stop it now Jhan aext year or two years heme. The expenses can bo cut down to the income.' If the city cannot pay for new crosswalks," the numerous electric ligltts,tc., etc., without more indebted ness, let tiie people either go without "these luxuries or raise the amounts needed by subscription. Careful econ omy must be introduced in our city finances sooner or later, and it is by fur tlio best to begin that economy now. The Indebtedness has given Oregon City a black eye among moneyed men and will retard her growth. It has thwarted thusfar the sale of the new (10,000 water bond. When capitalists learn that a city of he,' size has a bonded debt of 50,000, they are loth to add to it by buying the bonds. The evil o( the age Is, a mania of in dividuals, cities, conntieB, states and ,j national governments to expend ahead ot their Income, to saddle the bill for the extravagances of the present generation on tit generation to come. The corporation of Oregon City can . find must live within her inconip. : If the lifting of the mist of contra- : diciory statements and wilful lies shall . Hinlte plain the fact that the adminis tration has forced on the kingdom of Hawaii a queen whom its leading citi zens had deposed, the mistake will be a ' very grave one. But when the truth .becomes known, it is likely that the administration will be vindicated. It Is hardly possible that a president of the United States would resort, through his secretary of state, to the suicidal policy of aiding and supporting by force of arms the rejected and despised sovereign of a foreign country. This country should permit the Hawaiians to have mid enjoy the kind of government that suits 'them best. In the president's forth coming messaue the Hawaiian sipuibbl e will no doubt be fully ventilated. The enemies of Cleveland make liberal use of the present opportunity to turn pub lic opinion against him, and to threaten Impeachment. CASCADE RESERVE. Its Extent, Hound Metes, nix! ' Complaint is being made by taxpayers 'that the Fifth street assessments are extraordinarily high. If the city's treas ury had been in a healthy condition at the time bids were invited for the im provement, and the estimated spot cash cost of the same had been covered in the treasury previously, not one con tractor, but severul, perhaps a dozen, would have bid, and the work would probably have been done much cheaper. The Fifth street improvement con tract was rushed through as though there would be no time for lotting con. tracts next year or In '05. That the street is graveled only in the middle, loaving a roadway of soft mud on either Tiitle, is also a just cause of fault-finding. 'Missouhi democratic war horses are soured because they have been beaten In the race for the political sweepstakes. J. Scott Harrison, a brother of the ex president, was made surveyor" of cus toms at Kansas City, the chief federal office in that town. Mr. Hutrison acknowledges that he did not voto for the democratic candidates for president in 1888 or in 1802. Ha asserts that he voted the democratic ticket except nt presidential elections. The Missouri congressmen have been bucking the administration and now they have "got it in the nerV." Oovmsob I'exkoybk has deserted the democratic party for good. In a letter to A. B.
