Saturday e7ening, a meeting took place at Hhively's hall as an expression of in dignation over the employment of non resident laborers by the contractors on the street work. There was some dillifiilty in secur ing a presiding otlicer, two declining un til James Shaw was nominated who sub - mitted. Remarks were made by various persons and finally a resolution was passed that a committee wait on the mayor and city council to request them ilo.t they use all their influence to pur nmide the contrac tors to employ Oregon City lulurers. Water Supply at a Country Home. No country residence in Clackamas county has a more complete water supply than thut of Judge Alelilrum. The tank, of several thousand gallons Capacity, in the square tower of the windmill, supplies water at will not alone to either of several hydrants in the house or the spacious yard, but also, at a distance of several hundred feet, in the carriage houso, or at the feeding plate or the watering trough In the barn. In order not to commit a sin of omis sion, the judge has also had a sewer and a drain tile laid from the house to the Willamette river, thus rendering the sanitarv arrangements no less complete than the water distribution. The weather has been showery during the past week. The average amount of rainfali was 1.2 inches, and the mean temperature was 58 degrees, haying be come much cooler, t he sunshine was below the normal. Some crops have been benefited and others damaged by the rain The benefits greatly outweigli the damages. The evil effect can be summed up as trivial, consisting princi pally in blowing down grain which had not yet ripened, being the late spring sowing; also in causing plums, wnlch had been too ripe, to burst. .Some hay whitn had been cut was damaged, hav ing been left in the shock instead of hauling to shelter. The rains have caused the garden truck to take new root and a vigorous growth is noticeable. Late potatoes will make a better crop. Pastures have revived, consequently the dairy product has increased and the quality become superior. Preparations are being made by farmers to start the plough. fruit promises a good yield except peaches. The markets are well sup plied with fruit and some carload-i ol Bartlett pears and Ualdwin apples have been shipped to Kastcrn markets. The orune crop will be large, of excellent quality, and it has not yet suffered from the ram. ol enoili$ti rain nas laiieu 10 damage hops; in some localities it hag proved a benefit. Hop picking has be gun in earnest. It is thought the yields Will lnstiiy 'lie estimates maoe. me quality will be excellent and unusually olean and free from insects. There is a brighter prospect for the corn crop . 1 lie onion crop has matured and is ready for market. No threshing can be done un til more sunshine comes lo dry the straw and condition the grain. In eastern Oregon showery weather has continued since September 8th. Thunder storm- in the m lUtainoas ills tricts were generally a'teiided by hail. The mean temperature of the week was Cl deitrees. There was a defli h-noy of sunshine and the rainfall averael ..h of an inc h, which is Urgely in excess of (lie normal. The dense sin ke nas (lis appeared and the atmosphere is once ; diarrhiea, etc., more pure and healthful Threa! ing have funiid Ch has temporarily ceased owing to tlie dampness t the straw . There rem liin considerable work for the headers in sections where the grain wa sown late. Growing crops have received great ben efits by the niu. Vegetables have been eiNi-ially bem-fited. Pastures have improved that I hit pro-pect for suf ticient itra on the ramie is go.d. Hto-.-k fat ami beef cattle The session of the board opened with large attendance, tlie president, uuo . urownell, in the chair. The topic principally discussed bv the ooard on Monday evening was the in proved header and the improved kle running hy endless chain, 11 vented by a Mr. Matthews of Pendleton, models of which were placed by him before the board. His friend, U S. Marshal Grady, was also present, who assisted, in a good-humored way, in ex plaininilthe contrivances. The marshal is an unpretentious young man of ruddy face on whom the grave dignity of oflice sits lightly. The visitors wanted our citizens to form a stock company to manufacture the machines. Referred to committee on manufactures. Secretary Donaldson presented a bill of $50 from J. Al. Lawrence for descrip tive manuscript of pamohlet ordered in November last. As this matter had bun delayed so long the bill was laid over. II. Z. Burkhurt stated that the a Wertising committee would appropria e toe manuscript and issue a pamphlet from it in UO days. Bills of $18 from Enterprise, and of $21 from CouitiRK wereordeied paid. On motion of T L. Charman, member ship dues from May 1st to October 1st were remitted. The last full meeting of the board took place in May. II. Z. Burkhart said that the advei tising committee of which he is a mem ber bad placed an advertisement in Lewis & Dryden's Railway Guide at $15 a month for the period of one year, with the understanding that the sum was to be $17 a month it it was not continued that long. He said he believed that it would be best to stop the advertisement. The gentlemen present manifested much interest in the subjects brought up and it is hoped thut our business men will do their part -toward counteracting tlie hard times by acting in concert to advance the city's interests through the board of trade. We can do much more jointly than each one pulling alone by niinseii ami lor nimsell. "Moral and Immoral Literature" bv Kev. Howard Mactiueary in September Arena is a most remarkable contribution to the literature of the subject. The ar ticle will he read with deepest interest by all classes of people. Telling the Truth. It's common saying that newspapers lie, but when an editor writes a tiling and puts his name to it you may be sure he is telling the truth Head this : "We have never before said one word in favor of any patent medicine advertise ment in our columns, but having given Simmons Liver Regulator a fair trial, we do not heitilate to say, that for Dyspep sia and general debility it cannot be ex celled."
